The Value of A-<strong>Players</strong> 5<br />
<strong>the</strong> responsibility <strong>for</strong> leading <strong>the</strong>ir specialty retail business fell<br />
on <strong>the</strong>ir shoulders. They served cus<strong>to</strong>mers, bought product,<br />
oversaw <strong>the</strong> financials, ran training programs, created marketing<br />
campaigns, and dealt with <strong>the</strong> hundreds of o<strong>the</strong>r tasks that had<br />
<strong>to</strong> get done.<br />
Then <strong>the</strong> Herzogs found Eddie, who happened <strong>to</strong> have 12 years<br />
of experience managing a competi<strong>to</strong>r’s s<strong>to</strong>re across <strong>to</strong>wn. He was<br />
bored with his current role and saw Fleet Feet as a great new career<br />
opportunity. Plus, he would likely have a shorter commute. Over a<br />
period of months, <strong>the</strong>se fac<strong>to</strong>rs were enough <strong>to</strong> get him <strong>to</strong> make <strong>the</strong><br />
move and come <strong>to</strong> work <strong>for</strong> Hea<strong>the</strong>r and Jody. The impact was immediate.<br />
Eddie essentially started running <strong>the</strong> place. He used<br />
proven methods <strong>for</strong> improving buying and inven<strong>to</strong>ry. He brought<br />
specific ideas <strong>for</strong> new marketing programs. Eddie anticipated what<br />
needed <strong>to</strong> be done, and he did it.<br />
Eddie began <strong>to</strong> men<strong>to</strong>r and lead <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r staff. He set a positive<br />
pace and <strong>to</strong>ne <strong>for</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r employees. In doing so, he helped <strong>to</strong> create<br />
a great company culture in which even average employees per<strong>for</strong>m<br />
at <strong>the</strong>ir highest possible levels.<br />
The impact of hiring one A-player was exponential, not incremental,<br />
<strong>for</strong> this business. After hiring Eddie, <strong>the</strong> Herzogs could focus<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir time on important activities <strong>for</strong> acquiring new cus<strong>to</strong>mers,<br />
improving cus<strong>to</strong>mer retention, and managing inven<strong>to</strong>ry levels <strong>to</strong><br />
maximize profitability. In o<strong>the</strong>r words, <strong>the</strong> best people in <strong>the</strong> business<br />
got better because <strong>the</strong>y had one more person on whom <strong>the</strong>y<br />
could really depend. That process, repeated over and over, is how<br />
great businesses get built.<br />
In addition <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> business benefits, Eddie helped Jody and<br />
Hea<strong>the</strong>r <strong>to</strong> get <strong>the</strong>ir lives back. They don’t have <strong>to</strong> spend every waking<br />
hour at <strong>the</strong>ir s<strong>to</strong>re. They can take a day off <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r and trust<br />
that <strong>the</strong> s<strong>to</strong>re will be run well in <strong>the</strong>ir absence. They gain some margin<br />
in <strong>the</strong>ir lives and again look <strong>for</strong>ward <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> days <strong>the</strong>y spend in<br />
<strong>the</strong> s<strong>to</strong>re. Too many owners of small and midsize businesses have<br />
lives that are indistinguishable from <strong>the</strong>ir work. They have no time<br />
<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>mselves because without <strong>the</strong>m, things fall apart. But one Aplayer<br />
like Eddie can change all of that. He or she can take responsibility<br />
<strong>for</strong> important pieces of <strong>the</strong> business, oversee o<strong>the</strong>r people,
