The Value of A-<strong>Players</strong> 5<br />

<strong>the</strong> responsibility <strong>for</strong> leading <strong>the</strong>ir specialty retail business fell<br />

on <strong>the</strong>ir shoulders. They served cus<strong>to</strong>mers, bought product,<br />

oversaw <strong>the</strong> financials, ran training programs, created marketing<br />

specific ideas <strong>for</strong> new marketing programs. Eddie anticipated what<br />

Eddie began <strong>to</strong> men<strong>to</strong>r and lead <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r staff. He set a positive<br />

a great company culture in which even average employees per<strong>for</strong>m<br />

at <strong>the</strong>ir highest possible levels.<br />

The impact of hiring one A-player was exponential, not incremental,<br />

<strong>for</strong> this business. After hiring Eddie, <strong>the</strong> Herzogs could focus<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir time on important activities <strong>for</strong> acquiring new cus<strong>to</strong>mers,<br />

improving cus<strong>to</strong>mer retention, and managing inven<strong>to</strong>ry levels <strong>to</strong><br />

maximize profitability. In o<strong>the</strong>r words, <strong>the</strong> best people in <strong>the</strong> business<br />

great businesses get built.<br />

In addition <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> business benefits, Eddie helped Jody and<br />

Hea<strong>the</strong>r <strong>to</strong> get <strong>the</strong>ir lives back. They don’t have <strong>to</strong> spend every waking<br />

hour at <strong>the</strong>ir s<strong>to</strong>re. They can take a day off <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r and trust<br />

that <strong>the</strong> s<strong>to</strong>re will be run well in <strong>the</strong>ir absence. They gain some margin<br />

in <strong>the</strong>ir lives and again look <strong>for</strong>ward <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> days <strong>the</strong>y spend in<br />

<strong>the</strong> s<strong>to</strong>re. Too many owners of small and midsize businesses have<br />

lives that are indistinguishable from <strong>the</strong>ir work. They have no time<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>mselves because without <strong>the</strong>m, things fall apart. But one Aplayer<br />
