un panou pe care scrie ceva ne poate face să gândim că cineva ne
urmăreşte fiecare mişcare. dar e doar un text, pus pe o suprafaţă de
metal, aşezat undeva la marginea străzii. din neglijenţă, sau printr-un
automatism mental considerăm că mesajul scris e adevărat.
„dacă e scris acolo, înseamnă că aşa e”. nimeni nu se mai uită după
celelalte lucruri care ar trebui să facă textul una cu realitatea. prezenţa
camerelor de luat vederi în apropiere pare un lucru de la sine înţeles.
intenţia mea e să prelungesc inerţia mentală a privitorului până în
punctul în care aceasta nu mai funcţionează. deplasând pancarta
de pe stradă în spaţiul expoziţiei, urmăresc să transform o întreagă
strategie de pacificare a spaţiului public prin supraveghere într-un obiect
inofensiv. Acesta fiind scos din context, pune în evidenţă credinţa
automată în adevărul textului scris de către primărie, care stă la baza
întregului proces de supraveghere, mult mai mult decât munca reală
de scanare a gesturilor cetăţenilor din spaţiul public.
dacă toate locurile de joacă, trotuarele şi pieţele ar fi împânzite de astfel
de semne, probabil că ele ar provoca în noi timiditate sau isterie,
doar pentru că sunt puse acolo.
într-o a doua fază, mă interesează să disloc şi mai mult stabilitatea
aparentă a însemnelor produse de administraţie. după terminarea bienalei,
pancarta urmează a fi montată şi apoi abandonată în perimetrul
sectorului 3, pe un câmp deschis cu o suprafaţă de câteva sute de
hectare.
în această situaţie lipsa reală a supravegherii e evidentă, la fel ca şi
puterea formidabilă a sugestiei psihologice pe care un obiect purtător
de text o poate induce unui trecător ocazional.

a panel on which something is written can make us think
that someone is watching our every move. but it is just a text
on a metal surface, laying somewhere on the roadside. we
consider the written message to be true, out of carelessness
or mental automatism.
“if it’s there, it should be true”. no one looks for other things
that should certify the authenticity of the text. the presence
of the cameras in the vicinity is taken for granted.
my aim is to extend the viewer’s mental inertia to the point
that it stops working. by shifting the placard from the public
to the exhibition space, I intend to turn the whole strategy of
pacification of the urban space through surveillance cameras
into a harmless object. taken out of the context, this object
reveals that there is a naïve belief in the truth of the text
written by the mayor, which stands as the foundation of the
entire surveillance process – far more than the real work of
scanning the citizens’ gestures in public space.
if all playgrounds, pavements and markets were packed with
this kind of signs, their presence alone would probably make
us shy or hysterical.
in the second phase, I’m interested in further deploying the
apparent stability of the signs made by the administration.
after the Biennial, the placard is to be installed in the perimeter
of Bucharest’s 3rd District, in an open field within an
area of several hectares.
in this situation, the real lack of surveillance is obvious, as
well as the great psychological suggestion that a text carrying
object can induce on a passer-by.
