The discussion is undergirded bythe following question: how are Mayan struggles represented in thediscourse of the written media? Such struggles are conveyed throughdiscourse – words, nominalizations, verbs, adjectives and images. Theways in which discourse is used are related to power (and its abuse)and the racial construction of indigenous peoples, their history, theirstruggles and their own voice. The article approaches that racism inthe media as a social construction. The media present and representideas, themes, events, and diverse situations, constructing meaningsin the very process of representation. This analysis focuses on twocomplex and interrelated elements: the superficial representation ofMayan struggles and the construction of meaningKeywords: Representation, Maya; Kaqchikel; Discourse; Common SenseSTOCKHOLM REVIEW OF LATIN AMERICAN STUDIESIssue No. 6, March 201077
