The <strong>FIFA</strong> Referees Committee selected 24 refereeing trios<br />

for this <strong>com</strong>petition: three trios from the AFC, three from<br />

CAF, three from CONCACAF, fi ve from CONMEBOL, one<br />

from the OFC and nine from UEFA. It also selected fi ve<br />

reserve trios: one from the AFC, one from CONCACAF,<br />

one from CONMEBOL, one from the OFC and one from<br />

UEFA.<br />

The instruction and monitoring of these offi cials began in<br />

2007 with the <strong>FIFA</strong> preparation programme for referees<br />

and assistant referees for the <strong>2010</strong> <strong>FIFA</strong> World Cup South<br />

Africa, which included a team of <strong>FIFA</strong> instructors with<br />

expertise in a range of areas.<br />

All of these referees and assistant referees had taken part in<br />

the regular preparation and monitoring workshops, as well<br />

as <strong>FIFA</strong> <strong>com</strong>petitions. Furthermore, a virtual platform was<br />

launched that enabled permanent <strong>com</strong>munication to take<br />

place with the referees, as well as continuous control and<br />

monitoring.<br />

In addition to the technical, physical and psychological<br />

activities, a thorough medical examination was carried out in<br />

February <strong>2010</strong>.<br />

The members of the Referees Committee and the <strong>FIFA</strong><br />

referee instructors met all of the participating teams prior<br />

to the start of the tournament to brief them on technical<br />

matters. The players and technical staff showed great
