I pupi siciliani
Giuseppe Caravella è uno di loro, ha 74 anni e da quando ne aveva
continuità della ceramica smaltata, introdotta a Burgio nel XVI secolo. Burgio
dista 80 chilometri da Agrigento e qui i Caravella continuano a modellare e
stagnare le ceramiche secondo le forme e le tecniche apprese dai loro genitori
e maestri. Decorano oggetti d’uso quotidiano con le antiche coloriture
del giallastro per il fondo, del bruno-marrone, del verde, del giallo e dell’azzurro.
La ceramica, d’altronde, è strettamente legata alla Sicilia. La mescolanza
di elementi di terra, acqua e fuoco, connaturati alla stessa natura dell’isola,
evocano un passato antico quanto l’età neolitica, di cui esistono importanti

misti inseriti nel Rei sono tanti. È presente Antonio Piscitello di Santo
Stefano di Camastra, Antonino Aragona, ceramista e ceramologo di
fama mondiale, fondatore del Museo della ceramica, e poi, ancora, Giacomo
Alessi a Mario Iudici di Caltagirone. Quest’ultimo, in particolare, ha legato
il suo nome alla creazione di di cui ha realizzato un intero presepe
dal XIX secolo nel quartiere degli stovigliai di San Giacomo a Caltagirone,
fondata dal capostipite Mario e recentemente arricchitasi di una raccolta di
pupi siciliani con più centinaia di locandine, scene e cartelloni, riconosciuta
dall’Unesco come patrimonio orale ed immateriale dell’umanità.
