No other city in the world more than Istanbul gives the
impression of joining more than dividing, linking, cultivating
and holding together the pieces of a mosaic. Of
course, Istanbul evokes an image of colour, pieces, fragments,
chips of colour, of history, of bold leaps between
the faith in God and its own History, together with the
true, continuous, obstinate desire to be part with full
rights of Europe, of democracy, of that civilized modernity
the West itself has been preaching and pursuing
– and sometimes forgetting. If we mean to visit one of
