Cortina Inverno

i.e. 25.6 million tons: an unprecedented occurrence.
The problem remains that notwithstanding
the great investments in Swiss railway facilities
— the new tunnels of Loetchberg and Gottardo are
under construction; the improvements in public
transport; the increase in the number of commuters
around the towns; and of passengers on long
distance trains, it has not been possible to reverse
the trend which favours cars. Also in Italy we have
witnessed new important improvements: DB-ÖBB
EuroCity trains connect some of the main towns
in the North with Austria and Germany; they offer
high quality service, reliability and punctuality
at convenient prices. Another improvement is Italo,
born from the different ideas that form a new and
modern high speed transport service to a large public
(now also from Padova to Venice).
What about our Railway of the Dolomites?
What is left? A marvelous and highly trodden footpath
/ bicycle track on the former railtrack leads us
through the spectacular wonders of the Dolomites.
And in winter, as if by magic turned white by snow,
the old path, once followed by train tracks, is then
carved with the narrow rails of the cross-country
ski track. A level itinerary, over the gentle slopes of
the railway line, fluent and flowing, through tunnels
and over suspended bridges, with breathtaking
views of the mountains — Croda Rossa, Cristallo,
and Drei Zinnen — where you may take a breath
while passing by an old crossing keeper’s house
and, looking ahead, scan the blue sky and get on the
train of your desires.
