ABSTRACTA total knee athroplasty is a common technique for thetreatment of severe osteoarthritis of the knee. In order toachieve improved accuracy in placing of the prosthetic componentsa computer guided navigation system has been developedto assist the surgeon during the operation. In this study we haveinvestigated the advantages and disadvantages of this computerguided navigation system as compared to the conventionaloperating techniques. We have compared the results of 77computer guided operations with 134 conventional operationsin 2 academic hospitals. In the computer guided group onestress fracture occurred, possibly as a result of the navigationtechnique. There were no other differences in complicationsbetween the groups. In addition blood loss was reduced by approximately100 ml in the navigated operative group. On theother hand the navigated operation was on average 31 minuteslonger than the conventional technique.LITERATUUR1.
