VIRTUAL MUSEUMS: DIAGNOSIS ACCESSIBILITY

Creation of virtual museums facilitated visits to a wide range of population not
served before, attracting an audience not accustomed to attending these traditional
establishments. However, people with disabilities still face difficulties in access to these
environments because of barriers in developing their sites. Trying to study the accessibility
exists in virtual museums on the net, and enhance visibility of issues relating to web and
various shortcomings, the research question of this paper is to study main virtual museums
available on internet meet accessibility guidelines established WCAG (2008).
For virtual museum is defined as one whose actions in museums, or part of them
are worked in the virtual environment. Can be a part of virtual museum essentially a
physical or virtual museum, without existence of physical aspect.
In relation to barriers faced in virtual museums, we see that many are not
accessible to visually impaired and this fact are result of large number of images that
bear because of difficulty describing their work. As for people with hearing images, videos
and animations make it easy to access. Some recommendations to improve accessibility
of web pages in general, have been prepared by WCAG (2008), but even the simplest
recommendations have not yet been applied to most virtual museums.
