to improve the quality of the foods that come
from the fields. What is possible is to preserve them
for the longest time possible until their final consumption.
To this end, she details some minimum recommendations
that producers, distributors and retailers
should follow:
n Appropriate and careful handling;
n Keep clean and sanitized all machinery, grading tables
and other equipment used at harvesting and at processing
(packing-house);
n The packing-house should be located not far away
from the production sites, and should have a good cover,
access routes, water and electricity facilities;
n Right after harvest, it is time to grade the products and
eliminate the flawed ones;
n Accommodate the products in appropriate packaging
to avoid mechanical damage. Regardless of the type
of packaging, the maximum capacity for product storing
should be respected;
n Packaging should be palletable, that is to say, consisting
of submultiples of 1.00 m x 1.20 m;
n Vegetables should be immediately stored, if possible,
in refrigerated rooms. Once refrigerated, the products must
remain as such.
