Education consists in leading man, as thinking, intelligent being,
grooving to self-consciousness, to a pure and unsullied,
conscious and free representation of the inner law of Divine
Unity, and in teaching him ways and means thereto (Froebel,
1970, 2)
To succeed in this goal he develops sets of tools which are called gifts and
occupations. This study is limited with the first half of the Froebelian program
gifts, and especially the building gifts (gifts 3-6), and their relation to the
modern task of creative place making. A complete list of the gifts as described
by Jeanne Rubin are as follows: (Rubin, 1989,28)
As discussed by George Stiny, Froebel distinguishes three categories of forms
for use with the gifts: forms of knowledge, forms of life and forms of beauty
(Stiny, 1980, 410.) Each gift group includes geometrical three-dimensional
pieces. Yet, contrary to the set of pieces that we accustomed today, Ò FroebelÕ s
methodology stresses each time using all eight and twenty-seven pieces, thus
