Thermal Tourism and Women In Yozgat Region
SPA therapy is widely used in all the continents of the world, mostly South, Central and
Eastern Europe, Asia, South America and North Africa. Turkey is one of the leading countries in
the world due to the large number of thermal resources and spa facilities.
In recent years, the increase in public’s tendency towards traditional medical practices
and the decrease in the prejudicial attitude displayed in the scientific circles towards spa
treatment have increased the scientific interest in contemporary spa medicine and led to the
progress of research in this area. These developments have enriched and strengthened the
tradition of health-promoting use of spas.
Yozgat, a province in Turkey, which has high quality thermal waters (Sarıkaya, Sorgun,
Boğazlayan, Yerköy and Akdağmadeni) used for health purposes will be a pioneer of health
tourism thanks to its geographical location and accessibility.
Therefore, determination of the thermal tourism centers and accomplishment of strategies
to improve the infrastructure and superstructure of the thermal tourism in Yozgat have come to
the fore. The Ministry of Health has included the province of Yozgat located in the Central
Anatolian region in the thermal tourism master plans. In order to meet the expectations of
women interested in thermal tourism, the Women Thermal Aquapark and Sports Center was
opened in Yozgat.
Because life expectancy at birth for women is longer and thus they are more vulnerable to
chronic illnesses, the rate of using thermal waters for health purposes is higher among women.
Several studies on the issue have demonstrated that women use thermal tourism more frequently.
Yozgat thermal waters are known to be effective in the treatment of respiratory, musculoskeletal
and nervous system diseases. However, in general, thermal waters are used by women in the
treatment of genital organ diseases, ovarian failure, infertility and dysmenorrhoea (painful
menstruation).
Therefore, designing thermal facilities to be built in Yozgat culturally suitable for
women’s use and arranging appropriate promotion programs will attract women and therefore
their families and thus will contribute to health tourism.
