Cicely Saunders è universalmente riconosciuta il pionere<br />
delle moderno movimento delle cure palliative. Nata infermiera<br />
e assistente sociale, divenuta poi medico, ha<br />
dedicato la sua intera vita professionale alla cura delle<br />
persone gravemente malate. Dopo aver fondato il<br />
St.Christopher's Hospice a Londra nel 1967, ha saputo<br />
creare una medicina fatta di attenzione non solo ai problemi<br />
fisici, ma an<strong>ch</strong>e a quelli psico socio spirituali, sviluppando<br />
cosi il concetto di dolore globale.<br />
Questo libro include una selezione degli scritti<br />
più’importanti di Cicely Saunders: rac<strong>ch</strong>iude, brillantemente<br />
introdotti e selezionati da David Clark, i pensieri e<br />
le considerazioni di quarant'anni di professione a contatto<br />
con malati affetti da patologie non guaribili ed i loro<br />
famigliari.<br />
I temi affrontati sono omnicomprensivi: dal dolore e al<br />
controllo sintomi, al dire la verità, ai bisogni specifici dei<br />
pazienti affetti dal cancro o altre malattie. Le riflessioni<br />
sul tema dell’eutanasia, sulle temati<strong>ch</strong>e di ordine etico<br />
e teologico sono affrontati in diverse pagine del libro e<br />
rispec<strong>ch</strong>iano l’evoluzione del pensiero di Cicely Saunders<br />
dagli anni 60 ad oggi.<br />
Questo libro abbraccia an<strong>ch</strong>e i difficili temi dello sviluppo<br />
politico e organizzativo delle cure palliative, senza mai<br />
banalizzare e restando focalizzati sui bisogni dei malati e<br />
delle loro famiglie.<br />
Il lettore resterà affascinato nella lettura dalle levatura<br />
morale dell’autrice, accompagnata dalla capacità<br />
di rendere comprensibili e attuali dei temi sicuramente<br />
complessi e di non facile approccio. E’un libro per tutti:<br />
dai neofiti delle cure palliative <strong>ch</strong>e vogliano avvicinarsi al<br />
tema comprendendone le radici filosofi<strong>ch</strong>e, ai professionisti<br />
del campo <strong>ch</strong>e necessitano di spunti di profonda<br />
