A supermarket chain that is to push forward the development of a
country, just a few miles from the glitz of Dubai
Schardscha (engl. Sharjah), das „von
der Sonne beschienene Land“ – so die
Übersetzung des Namens, unterscheidet
sich von seinen Nachbarn Abu Dhabi
und Dubai durch seine Ölarmut und die
Geographie: Außer zwei Inseln im Golf
sowie drei Exklaven unweit der Grenze
zum Oman besteht das Emirat aus einem
Landstreifen vom Golf in die arabische
Wüste. Die Hauptstadt Sharjah, in der
90% der Emiratsbevölkerung lebt,
liegt an der Stadtgrenze und damit im
Schatten Dubais.
Auf diese schwierige Situation reagierte
seine Hoheit Dr. Scheich Sultan bin-Muhammad
Al-Quassimi Sharjah in den 70er
Jahren mit einem sehr weitsichtigen Plan:
Zum einen positionierte er seine Hauptstadt
als Zentrum der Wissenschaften
und der Universitäten. Zum anderen förderte
er den Genossenschaftsgedanken,
unter anderem mit Sharjah Coop.
Sharjah (the “land of sunshine”)
differs from its neighbours Abu Dhabi and
Dubai on account of its lack of oil and its
geography. With the exception of two
islands in the gulf and three exclaves not
far from the Omanian border, the emirate
consists of a strip of land that stretches
from the gulf into the Arabian Desert. The
capital city Sharjah, home to 90% of the
emirate’s population, is situated on the
city limit and therefore in the shadow of
Dubai.
His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin-
Mohammed al-Qasimi responded to this
difficult situation in the 1970s with a very
forward-thinking plan. On the one hand he
positioned his capital city as a centre for
the sciences and universities. And on the
other he encouraged cooperative ideas,
such as the Sharjah Coop.
