tion of the goods. Light is an important element of this presentation,
as it is for inspirational shopping.
5. Exclusive Shopping: Luxus & Status
5. Exclusive shopping: luxury and status
Exclusive shopping is mainly driven by the dominance system,
which in addition to efficiency also demands status, but also to
some extent by the stimulus system, which urges individuality
in a social context. The values associated with this world are
status, high quality, luxury and distinction. Even when shopping,
customers like to be made to feel special and enter a world that
cannot be entered by any Tom, Dick or Harry. The products must
also meet this standard. Only luxury brands with a clear claim
to distinction find their way into the product range. The personnel
must also meet this preference for distinction, forming part
of the overall setting with their appearance and conduct. Typical
examples of this emotional shopping world are the stores of Hermès,
Montblanc, Gucci, Julius Meinl etc.
The store design principles:
The general impression is aimed at absolute quality and luxury.
Expensive materials are used by renowned designers to implement
overall concepts based on the brand. The selection is extremely
limited, and products are presented in almost sacred isolation.
This claim is also supported by the design of the lighting.
The lamps themselves meet a high standard of design, and the
colour and strength of the lighting are fine-tuned to the objects
on display. The entire store is a scene created using light.
Hybride Shop-Konzepte
Shopping. Auch ein IKEA ist nicht „emotional rein“.
Hybrid shop concepts
The five emotional shopping worlds should be considered archetypes
in the pure forms described here. Combinations are often
used in practice, as illustrated by a few examples: In the new
supermarket concepts implemented by CBA, Edeka or Rewe, the
fresh produce section (fruit and vegetables, cheese, bread, sausages
etc.) falls clearly within the realm of inspirational shopping.
The dry goods and household products, on the other hand, are
on the border between trust and inspirational shopping. →
