3. Inspirational Shopping: Erlebnis & Phantasie
3. Inspirational shopping: experience and imagination
Inspirational shopping is almost at the other end of the emotional
spectrum from the two “rational” shopping worlds of “trust”
and “efficient and power” looked at above. It is situated in the
emotional space between the “balance” and “stimulus” areas. The
values associated with it are imagination, indulgence and inspiration.
And it is exactly these values that must be satisfied as
shopping expectations. Rather than shopping merely to satisfy
their needs, customers would like to be given ideas, for shopping
itself to already be a pleasurable experience, and to stroll around
selecting products at their leisure. Typical examples are the Depot,
the Douglas chain of perfume stores and the fresh produce
sections of the new Edeka and Rewe supermarkets.
The store design principles:
The general impression is aimed at experience and indulgence. Paths
are interrupted by islands of experience that break up the straight
lines and right angles of the product display units and aisles. Particular
attention is given to the design of the product display units in the
experience areas. They create a sense of identity while also providing
particularly attractive forms of presentation for the purpose of visual
merchandising. The functional presentation of goods is abandoned at
these islands of experience, and products are used in combination to
create worlds relating to particular lifestyles or themes. High-quality
materials are used, and the mix of materials and colours expresses an
impression of design. Particular significance is assigned to the lighting
concept. The uniform background illumination is scaled down, and light
is used to help frame the products through the use of highlighting.
4. Experimential shopping: exploring and being actively involved
Compared to the more laid-back inspirational shopping, experimential
shopping is much more active since it is mainly driven by
the stimulus system, which stands for exploration, curiosity and
discovery. This also already covers the most important values,
i.e. exploration, activity and freedom. The shopping experiences
associated with this world are a large selection (although in contrast
to efficient shopping this is not for reasons of efficiency, but
in the interest of playful discovery), a presentation of goods that
places the emphasis on experience, and the opportunity to actively
try out products. Typical examples of this shopping world
are Globetrotter and Vaude, also Apple stores.
The store design principles:
The general impression is aimed at experience and discovery. The
sales areas, which are often spread over several floors, are divided
into zones of experience and discovery based on different
themes. The theme being communicated is supported by the materials
used and the design and colour idiom of the fittings. Products
are presented according to lifestyles and themes in smaller
experience zones, but above all there are interactive zones in
which customers are invited to discover new products and try
them out. The design of the store is of a higher standard, and
pathways are not strict but play a secondary role to the presenta
