The emotional systems in the brain
Research into the brain has shown that it is our emotions that
fill our world with meaning, values and significance. Shops or
products that do not trigger emotions are immaterial from the
perspective of the brain. Therefore, let us first look at what the
emotional operating system in a customer’s brain looks like, and
how it works. The following Illustration provides an overview of
the basic structure of our emotional systems.
Balance
in unserem Bewusstsein bemerkbar.
At the centre of all emotional systems are what we call the vital
physiological needs like food, sleep and breathing. In order to be
able to evaluate food, the brain has a dedicated appetite/disgust
system that is very closely linked to the reward/punishment system.
We will not be looking at these structures in any further
detail. In addition to these vital needs there are three main emotional
systems.
Since the various scientific disciplines use different terminology,
terms that are both memorable and positive will be used to refer
to the individual systems. These are:
• The balance system:
Objective: safety, avoiding risks, stability.
• The dominance system:
Objective: Self-assertion, beating off competition, status,
power, autonomy.
• The stimulus system:
Objective: Discovering new things, learning new abilities.
The emotional systems in the brain usually manifest themselves
in our consciousness through feelings. However, emotions often
also manifest themselves subconsciously, with no corresponding
feelings. Each emotional system has a pleasurable and an
unpleasant side. The pleasurable side is triggered by the reward
system in the brain, and the unpleasant side by the pain/disgust/
