2 Abstract
Intention
Waste avoidance is the first principle of the Austrian waste management law, followed by waste
utilisation and disposal. The „Lokale Agenda 21“ aims to develop solutions for the social,
economic and ecological problems of the 21 st century. In this framework and based on the first
principle of the Austrian waste management law a catalogue and several pilot projects were
compiled in the 9 th Viennese district Alsergrund.
Methods
General waste management conditions, the current status and problems in the district were
determined by studying available literature, interviewing inhabitants, companies and local
officials.
Several workshops were held to gather ideas for waste avoidance together with the local
people. As a result several project ideas were born, put in concrete terms and worked out by
the project team.
In co-ordination with the „Lokale Agenda 21 - Alsergrund“ and „Magistratsabteilung 48“ some
projects and workshop results were short-listed for further adaptation.
Results
A waste management catalogue, with special focus on the situation in the 9 th district, was
created which consists of 27 ideas for waste avoiding campaigns.
A waste management plan „Paths to Less Waste“ was created. It contains information, contacts
and important addresses for the 9 th district concerning the topic waste avoidance.
Several pilot projects were implemented:
� Waste avoidance at the school KMS Glasergasse (less waste in domestic economy and
nutrition)
� Waste avoidance in students hostels
� Presentation of the project at a meeting of the environmental committee of the district
