In a recent religious weekly
there was a delightful story
about a Sunday school class,
the members of which were
asked to draw pictures of Bible
characters or events of Interest
to them. As might be expected,
one drew the ark, one the
rainbow, one David and
Goliath....but the teacher was
puzzled by one child who
worked very long and very
carefully on something not
immediately clear to the
teacher. When she asked what
he was drawing, the child
replied that it was a picture of
God. "But Johnny," the teacher
protested, "no one knows what
God looks like." Tbe child
immediately answered, "They
will...when I am finished!"
The new award, introduced
by CIT to recognize playing
holy lite certainly has as one of
its aims that of showing others
what God to like. Ibis was one
reason why Jesus of Nazareth
made such an impression on
His contemporaries: they
seemed to see in Him what God
was like. Should not our own
lives each be like this?
Perhaps, indeed, another story
wlllhdp. It isone which I beard
many years ago, but which I
love.
There wasonce a monkof the
order of the little Brothers,
who felt strongly that it was his
vocation to go preach
Christianity to the Arabs. So
much did he Insist that finally
the superior of the order bade
him Godspeed and aent him-off
to do that work.
Many years went by and
nothing was heard from the
little Brother. The superior
determlnedtoflndout what had
become of him, and went to the
large city in the Near East
where he was to have taken up
his residence. Surprisingly,
everyone in the bazaar knew of
the aging monk. The superior
was impressed, and asked
whether the Little Brother had
instructed them from the New
Testament They replied that,
instead, he had instructed them
from the Koran, which they
appreciated since it was a book
that they all knew and un-
derstood. "But," said the
superior, "are any of you then
Christians?" "We are aU
Christians," came the reply.
"PYom the Koran?" inquired
the confused superior.
"We could not find your
Christ in your Bible," replied
one of the converts, "but we
found Christ In the Little
Brother 1"
Prime Tittie
Enriching Our Lives By Shunning Retirement
by Cy Brickfield
While I have been living in
Washington since the. early.
1950s, I grew
up in (and am
still a . devoted
reader of the
newspapers of)
New York
where, even if
you don't read the Daily News
regularly, you frequently find
yourself leafing through its pages
in search of one of the city's
most enduring and beloved in-
stitutions—the "Inquiring Foto-
grapher" column.
A fascinating sounding board
for the voices of people who
would probably not otherwise
express their opinions in public,
the column epitomizes the "man
in the street" interview at its
basic best.
Each day's column poses a
question—sometimes relating to
a current news event, but more
often stemming from an in-
satiable curiosity about human
nature. Then comes the answers
and thumbnail photos of at least
a half dozen people in all walks
of life who are stopped and
questioned as they go about the
city on their usual pursuits.
During years of perusing the
interview. I gave little thought to
the person behind the questions
until I read in The New York
Tiinex this summer that the origi-
nal "Inquiring Folographer" had
just died at age 85.
His name was Jimmy Jemail
and, according to his obituary,
he started the column in 1921
and "by the time he retired in
1473, he had interviewed and
photographed presidents [among
them Harry S. Truman and John
F. Kennedy, a longtime fan of
the column], prime ministers
and royalty as well as many in
more ordinary walks of life."
That's the point at which I
stopped reading and started cal-
culating. If he was 85 when he
died, and had retired in 1973—
which was five years ago—he
must have been 80 when he re-
tired.
Fantastic! My day was im-
mediately made by the thought
of this marvelously inquisitive
man hanging in there long after
most have slipped or been
pushed into retirement. Not only
was his own life presumably
of doing the work he loved—and
which he did so well—but he en-
riched our lives with. 15 yean
columns we never would have
had if he had retired at 65.
Jimmy Jemail isn't the only
creative person who succeeded in
enriching our lives by shunning
retirement. For instance, there's
Ansel Adams, the 76-year-old
master photographer who, ac-
cording to The Wall Street
Journal, "is today enjoying al-
most unparallelled artistic popu-
larity as well as critical and
financial success."
So important has Adams'
work become during the past ten
years that The Journal recently
devoted a front-page story to
him—a form of recognition usu-
ally reserved for financial and
political luminaries. Yet, if Ansel
Adams had retired at 65, it is
' doubtful his work would be re-
ceiving the vast appreciation it b
achieving today for it was only
when he was 63 that it began to
sell well enough fur him to be
able to give up commercial as-
signments and concentrate solely
on the creative nature scenes for
which he is being acclaimed.
Then, there's George Burns
who has been performing profes-
sionally in just about every
branch of show business for
more yean than I—and. Ton
willing to bet, many of you—
have even been alive.
As a singer, George Burns is
a great comedian. As a comed-
ian, however, George Burns is a
national treasure — and one
which cultural conservationists
have, fortunately, not allowed Q
to go to waste, nor to be nostal-
gically worshipped solely on the
basis of past accomplishments.
Instead, the older Burns grows,
the more ageless he and his
comedy seem to be becoming.
Known to several generations
and millions of admirers for the
radio, film and television com-
edies in which he starred with
his wife, Gracie Allen, and for
his own work as a single after
her retirement and subsequent
death, Burns embarked upon the
newest phase of hh long, multi-
faceted career only three yean
ago in 1975. When his best
friend. Jack Benny, died, Burns
stepped into his role in the film
version of Neil Simon's The Sun-
shine Boys, and won an Acad-
emy Award fqr his portrayal of
an aged, retired vaudeville star.
Having followed this with the
title role in Oh. Oodt. his latest
film is the youth culture epic,
Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts
Club Band. Thus, at 82, George
Bums continues to carry a
heavier workload than many
performers half—or even a third
—his age, and has no intention
of depriving us of the pleasure
of his comedy.
"Retire? That's ridiculous."
he declares. "What does it for
you is to have something to get
up for in the rooming. .Now,
they say. you should retire at 70.
When I was 70. I still had
pimple*."
His sons, Joexand Jimmy, were
Earlier last week, George
Harry Hitter saw this one and
admitted they were out of their
