PAGE 2 — SECTION ONE ELECTION, PREVIEW In Somers Point Mell declares his candidacy By KATHLEEN BYRNES SOMERS POINT - Two people are now in the race for the vacant at-large council seat here with the announcement this week by Carl MeU of 7 E. Village Dr. as the Democratic candidate. Mdl joins the Somers Point Republican Club's candidate, Councilwoman Marion Friedberg in the race. However, it is very likely there will be other candidates for the unexpired two-year term made vacant by the resignation of Councilman Joseph O'Hara in early August. MeU enters the race with the support of the Democratic county committee. Christopher Rigby, president of the Somers Point Democratic League, said (he committee talked to several people about running but "decided on him because he seemed to be the most qualified person." Rigby added, "MeU is an independent thinker who won't let the party tell him how to vote on a particular issue." MeU admitted he has "not been active in politics in the city in one sense but has been involved in the city through community activities like the youth center and little league. A resident of Pennsylvania prior to his move here 10 years ago, he explained he never sought political office before because his. work in the construction business kept him too busy. Now that bis four children are grown and his work schedule is different, he feds he has the time to devote to the job. "I'm interested in seeing everyone treated properly," Mell said but added, "I'm not making any promises; I'U Just call the balls and the strikes aa they cross the plate." MeU stressed he would "vote on my own conscience." He said he'll take other people's recommendations, weigh them and then decide. His opposition, Councilwoman Marlon Friedberg, was sworn in last week to flU in O'Hara's vacancy until the November election. The winner of the election will take office immediately. Others in the coundl race are Kathleen (Kay) Dewees, representing the Somers Point Republican League, and Democrat James H. Smith, both of the first ward vying for Councilman Albert Clunn's seat. Clunn lost in the primary race to Dewees and although he cannot run for coundl in the first ward, he could run for the at-large vacancy. However, he said last week he doubted he would run. In the second ward, Somers Point Republican League candidate William Glancey and Democrat Charles G. Pancoast will face off for Councilman Jack Murray's scat. Murray lost in the primary to Glancey but has stated he wiU . not run for the at-large poajMoa. Interested residents of Somers Point have until October to file for the at-Urge position on coundl. Paul Martin Manion OCEAN VIEW —The marriage of Miss Mary Beth Peek, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William R. Peek of Ocean View, and Lieutenant Paul Martin Manion son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin T. Manion of Delran, was solemnized on Saturday, August 19. Monsigneur James J. Zegers officiated and was Joined by the Rev. William S. Reasner, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Cape May Court House, in an ecumencial ceremony held at the Church of the Resurrection in Marmora. The regular summer season is rapidly drawing to a dose and many families with schoolage children must leave their summer playground for their natural habitats. At this time of the year the • crowded conditions on the wreets and beaches are collecting their toll on residents and visitors alike. A bit of tranquility and a place of solitude is just what the doctor ordered My husband and I have found ^the perfect thing to fill the ^factor's prescription. A day of crabbing. I mean crabbing for (he crustaceans. Last Saturday we took off for such a trip and it dawned on me that all the tranquilizers and other unnatural remedies can't hold a candle to what Mother Nature has to offer. We always go up the river toward Tuckahoe and head back up one of the many creeks. Once at the spot and with the boat anchored we bait our lines, toss them overboard and Just settle back. No fuss, no noise, no commotion and no rush. All is peaceful. The water is calm with no wake created by many boats going full speed. The only sounds which disturb the air were the calls of a few gulls, some crickets chirping and every so often a bird winging by and passing along friendly greetings. This is the life. The land turtles most of the time are frightened by humans soyousee very little of their heads but these turtles. up in the still waters where humans haven't annoyed them yet are so unafraid you get the opportunity to really appreciate their markings. Oh yes, every so often we pull up our lines and net the crabs. We do come back with a couple dozen of them but the best part of the day is the peace, quiet and tranquility. This wasn't the first.time we had been up there. In fact, we make quite a few trips there during the season and every time we get the same vibes. Peace, quiet, solitude and tranquility. The first, the annual fall membership show, and the second, an open-air clothesline art exhibit. The fall membership show of the society will be bald at the Glass Museum in Wheaton Village September 17 through October 14 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This show is open to members in good standing. Original works in all media, sculpture, ceramics and crafts, china, woodcarving, pottery and other original crafts will be accepted. Pictures must be properly framed and wired with entry blank affixed. There will be a limit of three paintings, only one of which may be as large as 18 inches by 24 inches and one craft entry per member in addition to paintings.. The society will retain a 13 percent commission on all sales. Work will be received Saturday, September B from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Glass Museum. Bus trip set A reminder has been issued for all those signed up for the trip to Canada sponsored by the Good Counsel Leisure Club. The bus will leave Tuesday, September 5, at 7:30 a.m. from Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church, 40th St. and Asbury Av. and will return Saturday, September 9. Doughnuts will be served on the bus. Tumosa officiated at the double ring ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Harold Drass Jr. of 8117th St. and Bal Harbour, Fla. The groom is the son of Mrs. Doris W. Russell of 20 W. Maryland Av., Somera Point. Mrs. Jo-el Parks was organist and soloist. Selections included "Ave Maria" and, "Prayer of St. Francis." Mrs. Carol A. Rampone of Bricktown was matron of honor and serving as bridesmaids were Miss Wynn C. Cooper of Monsey, N.Y., and Miss Betty Jane Hamilton of this city. Timothy W. Russell of Harrisburg, Pa., served his brother as best man. Assisting as ushers were James H. Drass HI of Bal Harbour, brother of the bride, and Peter P. Rampone of Bricktown. Given in marriage by her father, the bride was attired in a gown of white organza trimmed with Chantilly lace and fashiooned with a high | neckline, full sleeves and a chapel-length train. Her mantilla was trimmed with Chantilly rosettes and draped from a face cap.'She carried a bouquet of orchids, white roses, stephanotis and baby's breath. The bridal attendants wore floor-length A-line sleeveless gowns accented with flowing chiffon ponchos with pink rose appliques and they carried bouquets of pink roses with aqua streamers. For her daughter's wedding Mrs. Drass chose a light blue quiana gown trimmed with white embroidered flowers while Mrs. Russell selected a plum quiana gown. Both mothers had white orchids. Following a reception at the Seaview Country Club, the couple left for a motor trip. They are making their home here in Ocean City. The bride is a 1972 graduate of Ocean City High School and a 1977 graduate of the University of Miami where she received a degree in architecture. She is a draftsman with G. E. Schilling and Aflsoriaten of Absecon. The groom, a 1970 graduate of Ocean City High School, is a welder for the City of Ocean Ctty. Another boat trip which we enjoy and which produces quite the same result of peace and quiet is a ride up the river to Mays Landing and back. Riding along the waterway always gives a very different view of the land area than one gets by driving along the highway. Anyone who has taken a boat ride along the bay will agree that Ocean City looks much different from that angle than riding down Bay Av. or any of the other streets. It is the same viewing it from the ocean too. The ride up the river to Mays Landing is uke that. The river is so pretty with shimmering water only occasionally disturbed by a boat and the lawns of the homes along the river are lovely aa they slope to the water's edge. This trip makes a nice outing taking only a few hours. We usually pack a lunch and stop somewherealong the way, drop anchor and enjoy a picnic right aboard our boat. We then set out again and lazily head back home. So, for those of you who are lucky enough to have a boat, when you get ready to turn on a headache or in some other way fight the noise, crowding and other discomforts of the busy . season, take my advice. Climb aboard your boat and head up the river either for a crabbing iltion or Just a leisurely .It really isworth the effort and you will come back all rested and with calmed nerves.
