Expects good season
Ocean City's Carideo named as head basketball coach at Stockton
POMONA—Joe Carideo of
Ocean City has been named the
new head basketball coach at
Stockton State College. The
announcement was made by
Donald Bragg, director of
Athletics and Recreation at the
college.
Carideo served as assistant
coach from 1975 to half way
through the last season. He
became acting head coach,

Following Werkman's
resignation from the college in
June, Carideo was selected as
the top candidate for the
position.
He was head basketball
coach at Sacred Heart in
Vineland for five years, where
he compiled a 102-12 record by
the time he left in 1971.
He was head coach at
Woodbury High School, until
1975, when he came to
Stockton.
Carideo became the club
sports coordinator at Stockton
in 1976 and was named director
of campus activities in
February, 1978.
Carideo said the team would
retain the same style initiated
by Werkman, but with an added
emphasis on "opportunistic"
play. "Forty percent of your
game is in transition from
offense to defense," noted
Carideo. "We want our players
to take advantage of those
transition times by controlling
defensive rebounds and
working for the fast break."
While Carideo admitted this
year will be Stockton's toughest
schedule so far, he said the
team • will be improved and
could beat any team it meets.
One reason for Carideo's
optimism is the five returning
senior starters on the team,
headed by Captain Bob Urie of
Toms River, who averaged 13.5
points per game last season.
Urie will be joined by Joe
Kolakowski of South Amboy,
Duane Murawski of Toms
River, Jim Brennan of
Freehold and Tyrone Austin of
Neptune.
"We have no 'easy games'
this year," Carideo said, "but
we'll be better than last year."
Carideo will emphasize the
execution of basic plays and
good shot selection.

Miller, and George Moll will be
among the baseball celebrities
appearing at the 5th
Philadelphia Baseball Card and
Sports Memorabilia Show on
September 23-24 at George
Washington Motor Lodge's
(invention Hall, Route 611 and
Exit 27 Pennsylvania Turnpike,
Willow Grove, Pa. The event is
sponsored by the Eastern
Pennsylvania Sports Collectors
Club.
Jacobs, a speedy second
baseman for the last A's team
to play in Philadelphia, batted
_47 in a career that included
188 games between 1954 and
.956. Spook moved to Kansas
City with the A's in 1955 and
finished his career with the
Pittsburgh Pirates. He is the
owner and operator of a Mr.
Donut shop in Mllford,
Delaware.
Miller pitched for the New
York Yankees from 1052 to 1954
and then was part of a 17-player
trade that sent him to the
Baltimore Orioles in 1955. His
career record was 6-9 in 41
games, with an earned run
average of 4.23. Miller now
lives in Hatboro Pa., and owns
a grocery store in northeast
Philadelphia. He was in the
news earlier this year for th-
warting a hold-up attempt at
his store.
Moll, a resident of Holland,
Pa., is regarded by collectors
as the father of the modern
baseball card. He was respon-
sible for the pre-and-post
World War II cards produced
by Gum, Inc., later Bowman
Gum Company in Philadelphia.
Former employees of that
company are urged to contact
the EPSCC to take part in the
award to Moll.
These VIPs will be among the
more than 5,000, including 150
baseball card and memorabilia
dealers, who gather from all
sections of the United States for
the nation's largest gathering
of collecting enthusiasts.
Visitors will have the op-
portunity to view and buy items
from baseball's past, chat with
guest celebrities, and bring
their unwanted sports
memorabilia items for one of
the show's three auctions.
Everyone attending will
receive a free 24-page program
and a baseball card.'

September 23 and from 9 a.m.
to 5 p.m. on Sunday, September
24. Admission is $1.50 for one
day, (2.25 for two days, with

Amateur Golfing Association
played its September tour-
nament at Green Tree Golf
Course. Myers had the low net,
59, and Donovan shot a fancy 72
for low gross. Each player also
won his flight; Donovan the
championship group and Myers
the second flight.
Ralph Canon, 64, was run-
nerup in the champion's flight
with Art CzachorowsU, 66,
taking third.
Joe Collo, 64, won the first
flight; Bob Wasakowski, 67,
was second and Bill Oliver
third.
Sam Johnson, 60, and Jack
Southard, 64, were the other
prize winners in the second
flight.

Mystery thriller
at ACC
"Foreign Correspondent,"
Alfred Hitchcock's dame 1940
mystery thriller, will be shown
Saturday at Atlantic Com-
munity College.
The screening win begin at 8
pjn. in the auditorium of
Walter E. Edge Han on ACC's
Mays Landing campus. Ad-
mission is free and open to the
public.
The movie's plot revolves
around a politically naive
reporter's battle against a spy
ring in the early days of World
War II. He is aided by a
beautiful woman whose father
is the reporter's main ad-
versary. The film contains
large increments of action,
romance, and humor.
Heading the cast are Joel
McCrea, Laralne Day, Herbert
Marshall, George Sanders,
Robert Benchley, and Edmund
Gwenn.
The screening, presented in
cooperation with the Atlantic
County library, is part of
ACC's 1978-79 Cultural Series.

player's strong points and let
them know they each have a
special role to play.""
Carideo expects to play eight
or nine members of his team on
a regular basis, sending in
relief players from the bench
for particular situations.
Jim Gaines, a six-foot, five-
inch center from St. Mary's
High School in Jersey City
averaged 11 rebounds per game
last season and is expected to
see frequent action this year.
John Langford, a six-foot,
one-inch sophomore from
Clayton High School, was
characterized by Carideo as
one of the best team players for
his size in the state at the guard
position. His strength is
bringing the ball up against a
full-court press.
Junior Joe Jozak, a six-foot,
five-inch center from North
Arlington High School is also a
strong rebounder, according to
Carideo.
Brennan is one of Stockton's
best "streak shooters," and will
be fed the ball whenever he is
"hot," Carideo said.
Commenting on the State
Conference, Carideo
to win, and we'll certainly be
competitive with every team
we meet," said the coach. He
said Stockton's strength will
depend on how well he can build
a strong bench.
"I'd rather have a team of
five good players who work well
together than an average team
with one superstar," said
Carideo. "And we have that
first kind of team."
