New Jersey Education Association celebrates its 150th anniversary
On December 28, 1853, 50
teachers met in New Brunswick
to find ways of improving New
Jersey's common schools. The
MEA meets over lay-offs
(continued from page 1)
a hearing so McCarthy "can
explain the problem."
When Wimberg was informed
that one of the city hall
telephone operators that were
laid off had only two years to
retirement, he said he didn't
realize any had served that
long.
"It's a shame, but when
you're up against it you don't
have any choice," he said.
Wimberg also reported that
four dredge workers will soon
be laid off.
day — the New Jersey
Education Association — this
year is celebrating its 125th
anniversary, and the NJEA
Review's September issue
opens a four-part series' on the
the state's educational history
with a review of "The First 100
Years."
"My Old Kentucky Home"
was a newly published song
when the NJEA was founded,
the Review reports. The state
had a population of about
500,000, including .200 slaves.
The common schools were
staffed by 1.500 teachers,
supervising some 100,000
"scholars." Plank roads were
being hailed as the ultimate in
transportation.
Outside the cities, the school
buildings of 1853 were generally
one room, heated by a stove,
with an outhouse nearby. An
educator of the times was so
irate at their condition that he
charged: "The state
penitentiary does now present
more inducements for a horse
thief to seek his sustenance and
comfort in its rooms than any
common school or academy."
Sea Isle pushes center
(continued from page l)
Moore Tuesday in an effort to
find out what was needed and to
get it as soon as possible.
La Rosa said although much
of the material needed had gone
out to bids earlier, expenditures
were still necessary to install
the materials. For instance, he
said, no city worker was
qualified to lay professional
carpet strips or install certain
aluminum panels.
The center is "practically
finished," said LaRosa, at least
on the inside. The building was
scheduled to be completed in
the middle of September and
LaRosa said, although it
wouldn't have been finished on
time, "it would*ve been close,"
without the delay.
As an explanation for why the
bids did not cover installation
The renovations to the
building, which will cost about
$113,000, is being paid for by a
$93,000 Housing and Urban
Development grant and a
$20,000 emergency appropriation
from the city. With
the new bids necessary,
however, the project will
probably cost more.
Bednarek said he is confident
that the project will not drag
into next year. "We'll get it
done by October," he said.
