Decide on action plan
Fickle fall weather can be dangerous
One of life's most harrowing
experiences for the boater,
especially the small craft
skipper, is being caught far out
on the water in foul weather.
Ttiis is why the U.S. Coast
Guard Auxiliary, in its public
classes on boating skills and
seamanship, cautions skippers
of all ages to keep a continuous,
wary eye on the weather.
With little warning, a calm,
sunny day can transform —
sometimes in a matter of
even dangerous conditions.
Line squalls, thunderstorms,
local fogs and the like cannot
always be predicted.
So what do you do at the first
warning of approaching heavy
weather? When wind and water
start to build, it's time to head
for shelter. Also, it's time to get
everyone into a personal
flotation device.
Now you must make a
decision. Do you weather the
storm at anchor or at low
power? Or do you'attempt to
run for safer waters? In cases
of extremely severe conditions,
it may be better to anchor up or
ride out the bad weather until it
passes.
If you decide to run with the
storm, be careful to use only
enough power to keep your boat
heading into the waves, not
letting it pound. A little pitching
and tossing is a lot safer than
rolling.
As you prepare to ride out the
weather, act quickly with
Realtor group offers marketing tips
Is your home in top
marketable condition? Take a
good hard look inside and out
before answering.
To help clients sell their
homes as quickly as possible
and at the best market price,
realtors often suggest that
clients "spruce up" a bit to
enhance the appearance of the
property.
"Realtors see many homes
on a daily basis andean readily
spot flaws in appearance which
could produce a negative first
impression on the part of the
buyer," says Danield J.
Cblangelo, president of the
15,000-member New Jersey
Association of Realtors. "Many
of these flaws can be corrected
with little effort on the part of
the homeowner."
Colangelo suggests the
following tips for making the
first impression a favorable
one:
-Lawn should be mowed,
hedges should be trimmed and
weeds should be pulled. Clutter
should be removed from the
yard.
-The yard and walkway
leading to the front should be
cleared of toys or other objects.
Cracks in the drive and walkways
should be repaired, and
oil stains removed from the
drive and garage floor.
-Is the exterior paint badly
faded, cracking or peeling?
Apply a fresh coat. The same is
true inside. A relatively neutral
color is suggested.
-Any necessary major
repairs should be made. Save
receipts and keep track of
costs, some are tax deductible.
-All necessary minor repairs
should be made as well. Fix all
leaking faucets, for example.
Often all that is needed is a
washer, a few tools and a few
spare minutes.
-Oil squaking door hinges.
-Replace burned out light
bulbs.
-Crowded rooms look small,
so remove excess furniture.
-Organize and clean out
closets. (Consider holding a
garage sale to dispose of excess
furnishings.)
-Make certain all windows
open easily.
-The kitchen should be neat
and clean. Organize cupboards
and be sure appliances and
counters are free of grease and
grime.
-Replace any broken tile in
the bathroom. Caulk around the
tub if necessary.
-Be sure to remove unsightly
A walk in the salt marshes provides view of 'kaleidoscopic world 9
seemed everywhere. But I had
an army on my side fighting
them. Hundreds of migrating
tree swallows, piling up at the
south end of the state because
of their reluctance to cross
Delaware Bay, snapped up
countless pests. The birds were
in constant motion, darting
from their perch on the lofty
returning to the purple tassels.
This time for the taxpayer
As I walked further from the
flies dropped to near zero. A
breeze, blowing from the west,
kept the early morning cool.
There were pools of water, left
temporary home to darting
minnows, trapped until the next
high tide released them back
into Scotch Bonnet. Some pools
were but a fraction of an inch
deep, covered with algae. It
was hard at work taking carbon
environment and producing
oxygen through the magic of
when living matter dies,
decomposes into detritus,
finally becoming simple
chemical compounds that were
present when life began billions
of years ago. Some anaerobic
bacteria can utilize this sulfur
as well as the naturally occurring
element to produce the
smelly gas. It's hydrogen
sulfide that gives a very faint
odor of rotten eggs to the salt
marsh.
On other parts of the marsh
was a faint sheen. The light of
the sun was broken into the
colors of the rainbow by a
monomolecular layer of
hydrocarbons and their
derivatives on the water's
surface. It wasn't enough to
excite an Exxon or a Shell
because ISO milliliters, about
enough to fill half a beer can,
was spread over SO acres or
more. These organic compounds,
too, result from
anaerobic decomposition of
detritus just as the great oil
fields were once formed deep in
the earth.
Where vegetation was sparse
you could see the orderly
arrangement of spartina stalks.
One way they propagate is to
push out a root or rhizome
under the marsh's surface in a
straight line.
The salt marsh is a
fascinating world. a
kaleidoscopic world, a uniquely
valuable world.
