Decide on action plan
Fickle fall weather can be dangerous
One of life's most harrowing
experiences for the boater,
especially the small craft
skipper, is being caught far out
on the water in foul weather.
Ttiis is why the U.S. Coast
Guard Auxiliary, in its public
classes on boating skills and
seamanship, cautions skippers
of all ages to keep a continuous,
wary eye on the weather.
With little warning, a calm,
sunny day can transform —
sometimes in a matter of
even dangerous conditions.
Line squalls, thunderstorms,
local fogs and the like cannot
always be predicted.
So what do you do at the first
warning of approaching heavy
weather? When wind and water
start to build, it's time to head
for shelter. Also, it's time to get
everyone into a personal
flotation device.
Now you must make a
decision. Do you weather the
storm at anchor or at low
power? Or do you'attempt to
run for safer waters? In cases
of extremely severe conditions,
it may be better to anchor up or
ride out the bad weather until it
passes.
If you decide to run with the
storm, be careful to use only
enough power to keep your boat
heading into the waves, not
letting it pound. A little pitching
and tossing is a lot safer than
rolling.

should be removed from the
yard.
-The yard and walkway
leading to the front should be
cleared of toys or other objects.
Cracks in the drive and walkways
should be repaired, and

drive and garage floor.
-Is the exterior paint badly
faded, cracking or peeling?
Apply a fresh coat. The same is
true inside. A relatively neutral
color is suggested.
-Any necessary major
repairs should be made. Save
receipts and keep track of
costs, some are tax deductible.
-All necessary minor repairs
should be made as well. Fix all
leaking faucets, for example.
Often all that is needed is a
washer, a few tools and a few
spare minutes.
-Oil squaking door hinges.
-Replace burned out light
bulbs.
-Crowded rooms look small,
so remove excess furniture.
-Organize and clean out
closets. (Consider holding a
garage sale to dispose of excess
furnishings.)
-Make certain all windows
open easily.
-The kitchen should be neat
and clean. Organize cupboards
and be sure appliances and
counters are free of grease and
grime.
-Replace any broken tile in
the bathroom. Caulk around the
tub if necessary.
-Be sure to remove unsightly

r I The sun was still low in the
eastern sky as I walked onto

seemed everywhere. But I had

them. Hundreds of migrating
tree swallows, piling up at the
south end of the state because
of their reluctance to cross
Delaware Bay, snapped up
countless pests. The birds were
in constant motion, darting
from their perch on the lofty
phragmites, zooming back and
forth once or twice and then
returning to the purple tassels.

causeway, the concentration of
flies dropped to near zero. A
breeze, blowing from the west,
kept the early morning cool.
There were pools of water, left
by a receding tide, dotted with
tiny islands. Among them a
glossy ibis and a wiUet played

monotonously.

as well as the naturally occurring
element to produce the
smelly gas. It's hydrogen
sulfide that gives a very faint
odor of rotten eggs to the salt
marsh.
On other parts of the marsh
was a faint sheen. The light of
the sun was broken into the
colors of the rainbow by a
monomolecular layer of
hydrocarbons and their
derivatives on the water's
surface. It wasn't enough to
excite an Exxon or a Shell
