Cove dredging is slated
(continued from page 1)
at one point the lagoon was
ruled to be a wetlands track and
not a lagoon at all, which
'seemed to make efforts to get
•"' dredging permits hopeless.
'' But in 1974, the Department
'Of Environmental Protection,
''with some new personnel, had a
change of heart. By the fall of
1 ' 1976, the city had procured all
'four necessary permits from
the DEP and the Army Corps of
Engineers. But since then.
I
L
problems with the dredge and
severe weather have combined
to put the project off.
Current dredging plans may
be the cove's last chance, since
some of the permits will run out
in December, for the second
time.
McCarthy said last week
there probably won't be a
problem getting the permits
renewed, as long as the
dredging has begun by
December.
Contrary to popular rumors.
the dredge is in good shape,
Hylond said.
"The dredge is not worn-out.
It has the probability of a 12year
life span ahead of it," he
reported.
Hyland's remarks came after
he made an inspection of the
dredge this week to see what
kind of shape it is in.
Prior to this July, Hyland had
nothing to do with the dredge
operation. But when the administrative
code was adopted
by the new council, he became
public works director as well as
dty engineer.
One reason the dredge is in
good shape is that some rather
expensive repairs were done on
the pump mechanism this
summer. Repairs and
replacement parts cost about
$25,000 Hyland said
Hyland explained that a
dredge consists of three main
parts: a pump, an engine, and a
floating platform.
"The pump is in excellent
shape," he said But the diesel
will probably need an overhaul
next year, at an estimated cost
of $10,000. He said the hull of
the dredge will need to be drydocked
and worked on in a
couple of years but an in-
spection during the last drydock
showed it to be in good
shape.
Hyland said operating a
dredge was always an expensive
proposition.
