editorials Two-shift dredge operation needed before winter City workers along with an area contractor should be busy at the end of Seacliff Rd. today or tomorrow filling nylon bags with cement to help shore up badly eroding beaches in the area. Apparently the city fully intends to pick up the $6,000 to $8,000 tab for the operation because an emergency situation exists in which property is threatened by an imminent danger. Seacliff Rd., however, promises to be only one of a string of erosion problems this winter as the beaches here and all along the Jersey shore are more vulnerable than they have been in more than a decade according to officials with the state Department of Environmental Protection. Series of late spring northeast storms ravaged the beaches here and elsewhere leaving little time for the summer build-up for another winter of erosion battles. Consequently, the amount of sand along the shoreline is far short of what is needed for winter tidal protection. While other shore communities have no immediate remedy available to begin preventative measures, Ocean City does, but little if nothing has been said about it. There is no question that the city dredge, the Sandpiper, is capable of pumping enough material onto the beaches to protect at least some spots if not the entire shoreline. features Menu item with growing popularity However, it was pointed out during the spring campaign, and agreed to by all three mayoral candidates, that utilizing the dredge for only one eighthour shift is a totally worthless venture. At least two, and preferably three, shifts are needed to keep ahead of tidal movements and begin the badly needed building process. Recognizing this fact during a campaign that was far from a sure victory, then candidate and now Mayor Chester J. Wimberg overruled earlier statements that there was not enough money in the budget for a second shift and immediately signed on more employees for a 16-hour operation. Now, however, when the dredge is needed more than ever. Wimberg has announced that the employees are being laid off and the dredge will revert to its one, probably useless eight-hour shift. Recognizing an imminent danger, council last week appropriated $50,000 for the north end project. Rather than running all winter with emergency appropriations for "band-aid measures," perhaps it's time now to consider appropriating the needed funds for continued double shift operation of the dredge. Dog owner cooperation needed Somers Point last week joined in with Ocean City's battle against dog deposits and passed a "pboper scooper" ordinance. More and more people are rising against dog owners who have little regard for the health or property of others when they take their animals for daily walks. Hopefully this group of discourteous people are in the minority of pet holders, but there are enough to cause people to rise up in arms, which is a shame for the responsible dog owners. At a hearing in Ocean City last week, Police Chief Dominick C. Longo said it will be up to the people to help law enforcement officers nail the irresponsible people after the'ordinance is passed here. The same will probably be true in Somers Point. Once the law has been in force in both cities for some time and the irresponsible pet owners find they can no longer let their dogs roam at large or despoil other people's property with impunity, perhaps dogs once again can attain their position as "man's best friend." Scientists study uses of the not-so-famous tilefish Although they've beenaround these parts for at least 100 years, tilefish haven't exactly become a household word — yet. If you've never heard of them, you're not alone. Scientists don't even know very much about them, at least for now. But there are fishermen in New Jersey and marine biologists at Rutgers University who are trying to bring all of us up to date. Since the late 1960s a handful of charter....and-v party ..boat captainstilang the J«roey-shore have been taking sport fishermen to tilefishing grounds when other fishing has been slow. Commercial fishermen, particularly out of Barnegat Light, have caught tons of the fish in recent years, prompting publicity for that community as "tilefish capital of the world." Marine biologists at Cook and Rutgers colleges of the State University are seeking to develop a sound biological basis for management of the important and developing fishery to optimize yield and minimize depletion of the stocks. Funded by a N.J. Sea Grant under the auspices of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Churchill Grimes of Cook College and Kenneth W. Able of Rutgers College are collecting and studying specimens in an effort to learn more about Lopholatllus chamaeleonticeps,commonly known as the tilefish. "It's really an interesting animal," said Grimes, "but its biology is virtually unknown. There ha* been almost no research done on tilefish despite the fact that fishing is going great guns." Tilefish have been appearing increasingly on restaurant menus, on the food pages of newspapers, and on crushed ice in fish market bins — all to the delight of fish lovers. The deep-sea denizen is rapidly gaining favor at the table because of its mild-tasting flesh — variously described by those with discerning palates as rirn ||ar to that of lobster. shrimp, crab or red snapper. In recent years, however, commercial landings have increased steadily — from some70,000pounds in 1968 to 4.5 Tilefish occur from the Gulf of Maine south to Guiana and throughout the Gulf of Mexico. Tney inhabit burrows in submarine canyon heads and glacial boulder fields where they bottom-feed mainly on crustaceans. They can be found more than 80 miles at sea and at depths of 50 to 120 fathoms. The closest "hot spot" for New Jersey fishermen is Hudson Canyon. The travel distance, fishing depth and abundance of other species, Able suggests, account in some measure for the creature's relative anonymity, as do the strenuous fishing methods. " " " Commercial fishermen typically string 10 to 15 miles of line, on the bottom with baited hooks every IS feet, marked with floating buoys, while sport fishermen use stout rods fitted with large electric reels loaded with hundreds of yards of line testing SO pounds or more. Research techniques range from simply measuring the fish to sophisticated scientific analysis of genetic variation in eye, liver, and muscle protein. Through the cooperation of fishermen and the National Marine Fisheries Service, Grimes and Able have acquired specimens from the Gulf of Mexico, the South Atlantic bight and the Mid-Atlantic bight. All data is subjected to rigorous statistical analysis to determine if there are real differences among fish from the three areas- Preliminary indications are that fish from the Gulf of Mexico and the South Atlantic bight are similar while Mid- Atlantic inhabitants show some genetic variations. The scientists have completed one year's research and need to conduct two more before they can hope to predict the effects of different levels and strategies of fishing on yield. While fishermen continue to ply the depths for tilefish and biologists attempt to learn more about their prey, the combined efforts may well make the forgotten tilefish a household word again — partlculary at dinner tune. A glimpse of Ocean City's past By CATHERINE M. BOWEN Society Editor In this day of crowded highways with the multitude of automobiles, it is interesting to look back on transportation of a few decades ago. Ocean City had a number of public transportation services including a train which ran between Ocean City and Stone Harbor about 1900, a stage coach route back in the late 1700s, train service from Philadelphia and many others. Public transportation within Ocean City was provided by an electric railroad open-air car which ran from Steamboat Wharf at aid St. and the bay down to 59th St. The cars met the ferry which brought passengers from Longport and traveled to the southern end of Ocean City using Battersea Rd., Atlantic Av., Wesley Av. and Central Av. It is reported many folks would pack a lunch basket, board the trolley for the ride to the undeveloped south end of the island, enjoy a day on the deserted beach complete with picnic lunch, then ride the trolley back into town. The trolley had fallen on bad times and finally came to an end in 1929. This first photo shows the old open-air car and the next pMolo shows a later enclosed version of the trolley. The third photo shows the trolley on its route to the south end. This photo was taken in the 800 block of Wesley Av. There was another type of railroad in Ocean City. This one connected the Island to the mainland and continued on into Atlantic aty. The line was originally opened in 1910 going from Ocean City through Somers Point, Iinwood, Northfield and terminating in Pleasantville. The line later was extended to continue to Virginia Av. and the boardwalk. Trains left the terminal here at 8th St. and the boardwalk every hour. This service, continued until World War II when it was abandoned and in 1946 the bridges across the bay were removed.
