Hammonton team has never scored here
St. Joseph's faces Raiders in home opener Saturday

While Ed Woolley was
watching his troops drop a 46-0
decision to Audubon last
Saturday, Chuck Donahue was
smiling. His Wildcats from St.
Joseph High School in Hammonton
dominated Wildwood
and added a 34-6 victory to their
win column.
Itiis St. Joe team boasts a
young offense and a veteran
defense which, in effect, shut
out the visiting Warriors before
Donahue began substituting
freely in the third quarter.

The 1978 Ocean City Hawks
1 opened its season with a bang
by topping the Avalon-Stone
Harbor Firellons 33-14.
The Hawks wasted no time
getting on the Scoreboard,
taking the opening Uckoff and
marching 60 yards for a touch-
-down with runningback Bob
Miller scoring from the 4-yard

Miller, who rushed eight
times for 192 yards and four

When called on, the Hawks
defense was solid. The Une,
Costigan, Bob Lewis, Art
Sinclair, Parker and John
Millar, controlled the line of
scrimmage, while linebackers
Miller, Jones and Eugene Watts
turned in fine plays. Backs
Baker, Bob Cappolina and Bill
FogUo did not allow one pass
completion.
The Hawks next contest will
be against defending 4ampions
Lower Township Raiders.
The game will be played at 2
p.m. at the 6th St. recreation
field and refreshments will be
available. The game win be
preceded by the Skyhawks Pee
Wee game at 12:30.

Woolley said earlier this week.
"Obviously, they didn't throw
as much but they didn't have to.
Their running attack is super.
"Their running attack is
different than Audubon's. St.
Joe uses more counters and
more misdirection. Audubon
sort of came right at us. But
Chuck uses (John) Mitrovic
until you become concerned
with him. Then they go
somewhere else."
And Donahue uses Mitrovic
for good reason. "John is by far
the best running back we've
ever had at St. Joe," the
Wildcat coach said. "He is fast,
strong and smart. There is not
anything he cannot do on the
football field. He kind of
reminds me of Ron Dorsey, the
guy who was so good at
Hammonton a few yean ago.
Except John's faster."
Last year, when St. Joseph
took a 16-7 decision over the
Raiders in Hammonton, was
the first time the Wildcats had
ever beaten Ocean City in
football. This year they'll be
trying for another first. They
have never scored a point In
two previous games at
recreation center field.
"And don't think for a minute
we're expected to change that
very easily," Donahue added.
"We're not coming down there
expecting to play a 46-0 loser. I

Hermon School students pursuing
a 10-week term abroad in
France this fall. The students,
led by Ms. Elsie Augustave,
who is associated with the
International Studies Program
at NMH left the country on
September 12 and will return

lose that game by 46 points. It
Just seemed like every mistake
they made Audubon took advantage
of.
"I was impressed with their
tackles, especially on defense,
and the thing that scares me the
most is their offense. That little
quarterback and the two
running backs will gain some
yards this year. They are the
type of team that can hold the
ball unless you dig in and stop
them. I don't like teams that
keep the ball. It makes me
nervous. I like our team to
control the ball."
Last Saturday the Raiders
failedtocontrol the ball though,
as Donahue suggests, there
were moments when they indicated
it was something of
which they were capable.
Woolley, who plans very few
changes in his lineup this week,
has been working on getting the
Raiders to play with more
aggression. "We really didnt
go out and hit people last
week," he said, "We sort of just—
let things happen. This week,
we're going to go out and make
a few things happen."
