seven miles of beach.
Gapt WflUams started as a
guard with the original crew in

leutenant and took over as
captain in tMt He is new
retired and lives in Florida.
Capt. Laflerty, a retired
aerviceman, was appointed
captain in 180 when wmiams
retired.
One of the Ughlights of the
season is the lifeguard races
hek) with pstrob of other
resorts from Atlantic City to
Cape May. Both swimming and
boat races are held with Ocean
Qty winning more than its
share of trophies.
From 1933 until U35 the local
patrol won three national
championships and from 1961 to
X977 the teams won 90 Sooth
Jersey Champknuhtps. These
honors are not easily come by.
From the beginning of the
season until the final races the
guards spend hoir after hour
practicing. The day of the races
crowds of spectators cheer
them on making aD the hours of
work worth whik.
The trophies and awards are
presented the night of the an*
nasl lifeguard baD held the
hvtter part of August. An added
attraction to this social event is

City Beach Patrol. A
representative from each of the
city's four beach semes is
selected to complete for the
title. The winner is picked by
the five lieutenants d the beach
patrol and is honored at the
ball.
The job of lifeguardtag may
seem like a seasonal occupation.
Not so. The winter
months are used to fix op and
paint the boats, oars, buoys and
other equipment as well as the
lifeguard stands. The boat shop
at 15th St. and West Av. is a
busy place readying these
things far the upcoming season.
Stringent tryouts are held
each May to flO vacancies on
the force. Many guards return
lite relaxation of a summer on the beach.
year after year but, for those
who do not, replacements must
be found. Several of the senior
guards have records of over 20
years with the force.
To tfae general public tfae job
of a lifeguard may seem very
glamorous and desirable but,
when someone is in distress and
needs help tfae glamour departs
and the basic skill comes to the
foreground.
The Ocean City lifeguard
crew numbers 105 guards, five
lieutenants and a «*»p>plp along
with an ambulance driver who
responds to emergencies on the
beach. Ocean City is very
forttunate to have such a crew
and has an enviable record on
its beaches. Long may it continue.
