'•/•!•• i PAGE 8 — SECTION TWO Biggs supports tax cut James Biggs, Republican candidate for Congress in the Second Congressional District, has announced his support of the Roth-Kemp Tax Reduction Act. Stressing the importance of this piece of legislation, Biggs emphasized that "the Roth- Kemp Tax Reduction Act would permanently cut federal individual income tax rates for all Americans by an average of 33 percent across the board over a three-year period." Last year alone Americans paid more in taxes than they spent on food, clothing and shelter combined. Under a progressive income tax system, inflation pushes taxpayers into higher brackets as their income increases, automatically forcing them to pay a high proportion of their income in taxes and leaving them with less take-home pay. It means government can reap larger and larger revenues without increasing traxes. "The Roth-Kemp bill is exactly what is needed to achieve the kind of tax relief the American people are demanding," Biggs noted. "The Republican tax-cut bill would foster economic expansion, increased production of goods and services, improved productivity, creation of new Jobs and an increase in the Gross National Product. Jobs created by this economic expansion would be permanent and would give workers the opportunity for advancement and financial security, plus a chance to make life better for themselves and their families." The Republican tax-cut plan would ease the tax burden of every taxpaying American simply by creating new, additional taxpayers to share the load — additional taxpayers who would fill new jobs produced because the tax cut would increase economic activity and improve the economy. The ultimate benefit would be most profound for those Americans who find themselves in the position of lasthired, first fired — the marginally employable people in our society who, lacking skills, are hit hardest by inflation and economic slumps and, therefore, are among the first to gain from economic resurgence. Calling for the passage of this bill, Biggs noted that "high prices and high taxes are causing great concern among Americans in every walk of life, and something must be done about them. The passage of the Roth-Kemp bill- would be a positive step in this direction and a definite benefit to the people I am seeking to represent in Congress." Robert B. Levin, director of the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs. "Hie State of New Jersey, through Attorney General John J. Degnan, has urged the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to order the recall. The subcommittee report provides compelling evidence that this recall is urgently needed to protect the lives and safety of millions of motorists," Levin said. "•I am concerned that initial committee's recommendations gave consumers the mistake impression that the subcommittee itself ordered a recall. No recall of these tires has been ordered yet! The subcommittee's report, of course, is only a recommendation. Only the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is empowered to order a recall of these tires," Levin added. The tire hotline established by the State of New Jersey to assist owners of these tires received an unusually high number of calls starting recently from consumers who believed a recall had been ordered. The hotline has had over 2,700 calls in a month of operation.
