It's hard to believe that nearly a generation of Glen Cove Lagoon inhabitants have had to stand by and watch other lagoons dredged on a comparatively regular basis while their's became more and more impassible to the point where today even the smallest of boats sits mired in mud at low tide. 'It's even harder to believe that state and federal officials took such a hard line on this particular lagoon when residents could show that clearing the lagoon was not necessarily for recreation alone since the building bay mud became a breeding ground for niosquitoes and other pests, turning the small tributary into a health hazard. Cape May County smokers should not need additional reminders that cigarettes are indeed harmful. Still, many thousands smoke and some population groups, including teenage girls, are smoking more every year. While estimates vary, it is a conservative guess, according to local American Cancer Society officials, that at least half of Cape May County smokers would like to quit. What seems to defeat most smokers is the thought of an endless future without cigarettes. "The.Great American Smokeout" is the cancer society's pragmatic approach to this dilemma. Smokers here are being urged to sign a pledge not to smoke for just one day, November 16. If the next morning begins with a cigarette as usual, the smoker will still know that the habit is his to control — and, he'll be one day healthier. Smokeout' Some will get through the day and stick with it — and some won't. The cancer society has set realistic objectives for this promotion. Officials with the organization hope to get pledges from two out of five smokers in the county. The signed pledge is important, according to county cancer society officials, because it serves as a significant psychological commitment. It also helps the organization gauge the impact of its efforts. When nearly 100,000 Americans die annually of lung cancer, victory on any scale is worth the effort. The society is ready, officials say, to offer support in the battle of willpower along with suggestions of other ways to "kick the habit."
