For pole climbing
Bell designs new equipment for women
Ask any New Jersey Bell
installation technician and he'll
tell you it's no easy trick
climbing those utility poles to
hook up phone service.
Imagine that you're five-footthree,
115 pounds soaking wet,
ami the gear you have to wear
on the Job was designed for
huge, burly men. Now you have
some idea of the logistical
problems faced by women who
work as installation
technicians.
To help the increasing
number of women hired by New
Jersey Bell as installation
technicians —andsmaller men
who perform the same job —
the Bell System came up with
some new climbing gear.
The climber, as it is called, is
an iron stirrup with a spike, or
gaff, for digging into the utility
pole. It is strapped around both
the foot and leg and enables the
technician to climb a pole
which doesn't have rungs or
steps.
A new, smaller version is
going into use at New Jersey
Bell's corporate training center
in South Plainfield, where installation,
cable splicing and
repair technicians receive their
basic training. The redesigned
climber for women accommodates
a smaller foot and
leg. The gaff angle is altered to
make climbing easier, faster
and safer.
"A lot of women were having
serious problems with the
standard climbers" said
Ronald P. Zellns, Western
Electric engineer who designed
the modified climber. Western
•ectric's products engineering
division in Springfield drafted
specifications for the supplier
who manufactures the climbers
for the Bell System.
Zellns said he polled 215
women installers in mid-1975
for their opinions on the
equipment. Based on the answers,
four smaller climbers
were developed and tested by
101 women from four Bell
companies. He picked the one
that received the most
favorable reviews.
Does the new climber make a
difference?
Marta Sterrett, 24, of
MorriBtown, an installation
technician for more than four
years, thinks so. One of a dozen
women at New Jersey Bell to
test the modified gear, she gave
the new climber the best en-
dorsement possible. She asked
Car the first pair to arrive in
New Jersey and took them to
work.
