SEPTEMBER 8.19781 'Astro IW 'Car of the future' is on display at Palmer Chevrolet tomorrow Chevrolet's Astro III— a jetstyled, two-passenger "dream car" featuring a tricycle-type wheel arangement - will be a featured attraction of the Palmer Chevrolet Olds dealership tomorrow and Sunday. One of the most dramatic in the family of research vehicles designed for Chevrolet by General Motors Styling, the Astro HI is intended to probe Aiture possibilities for turbine- powered personal automotive travel. Astro I was an exploration in automotive aerodynamics and Astro II moved a step further as a mid-engine Sports GT "idea" car. The Astro Ill's neartricycle wheel layout reflects the latest Jet aircraft practice and provides the basis for exploring new body forms expressive of today's advanced transportation. Astro III is envisioned as a high performance vehicle suited for travel on restricted access or possibly systemscontrolled interstate highways of the future. Going beyond an exercise in styling, the Astro Ill's concept is backed by investigations conducted by several groups within General Motors. The Astro III has a 94-inch wheelbase and is 195.7 inches long. Its curb weight is 1,970 pounds with two passengers. Maximum width at the rear is 70.6 inches. The pearlescent fiberglass body tapers to a slim nose enclosing twin tires on a common pivot, giving the appearance of a single front wheel. A power-actuated canopy moves forward and upward from the passenger com- partment to give easy entrance and exit to the speciallycontoured individual seats. When the canopy is closed, overall height of Astro in is only 40.6 inches. The car has an aircraft-type - interior finished in black. The twin front wheels are steered by power-assisted pistol grip lever controls. Rear vision is provided by closed circuit television with a viewing screen mounted on a console between the seats. Power plant for Astro III is the Model 25O-C18 gas turbine engine produced by the Allison Division of General Motors. This engine—also used to power military and civilian helicopters — was selected because of its light weight and high power output. It weighs only 139 pounds and produces 317 net horsepower. It is mounted behind the passengers for increased vehicle stability and is linked to the wide-tread (68 inches) rear wheels by a 2speed Hydra-Matic transmission. As with its other Astro research cars, Chevrolet has no production plans for Astro III, but is carefully evaluating the unusual design concepts it embodies. The skills center provided tutorial instruction supplementing classroom learning for the -educationally disadvantaged EOF students. Eight skills center tutors utilized a "link tutoring" practice where they sat in on actual classes to understand assignments and each instructor's expectations for homework assignments. The center hopes to experiment with the "link tutoring" system during CHORALE AUDITIONS POMONA — The Stockton Chorale, directed by Lewis Gordon, will resume its Monday night rehearsals September 11 at 7:30 p.m. in H-120 at Stockton State College. SENTINEL-LEDGER ^v^^.;;^^^^^^^^ Prime Time A Promising Future for 'Housing With Help 9 by Cy Brickfield Twelve years ago, when they were in their early 60s, Ken and Evelyn sold the rambling old house in which they had lived for nearly 20 years, and rented half of a relatively modest two-family bungalow in the same general neighborhood. Their three children were married, and Ken was al- .. ready partially retired, having recently cut back sharply on his commitments as an aviation economics consultant. While their half of the bungalow was only about the size of a modern two-bedroom apartment, it was comfortable and gave its occupants the feeling of living in a single-family house rather than an apartment dwelling. In many ways, it was the perfect arrange- - ment for a couple who regularly took their house trailer south for the winter months and on frequent fishing trips to Yellowstone National Park during the summer. Last summer, however, they didn't travel their usual routes. Evelyn's older sister was in failing health, and had grown extremely dependent upon her daily visits. Shortly after her husband's death nearly a decade ago, Evelyn's sister had moved into the Residence, a congregate housing facility in the rnidwestern city in which they lived, and it was there that she died last fall. During the winter, as their trailer sat in the Arizona sun. Ken and Evelyn thought about her sister and how well she had been cared for during her final days at the Residence. They thought, too, about their own personal situation and their own health in the years ahead. Finally, they decided that perhaps the time had come for them to move out of their bungalow and into the Residence. "When you get to be our age," explains Ken, "you have to face up to the possibility that you or your partner could become in- capacitated and need some kind of care for a pretty long stretch of time. If you're living in 'the kind of set-up in which this care can be provided while keeping the two of you together—or, at least, in the same building and not too far apart so you can see each other regularly — then there's a pretty good chance you'll come through okay." Instead of going fishing in Yellowstone Park as usual, Ken and Evelyn spent this summer dividing much of their furniture and other possessions among their children, and giving leftovers to local charities. It may not have been easy for them to part with some of their favorite pieces, but it was the only way they would be able to fit into their new apartment which is roughly half the size of their side of the bungalow, and which has a little more than twice as much living space as their house trailer. What they are losing in space, however, they will be gaining in functional conveniences — some of which may seem like luxuries now, but may become essential for survival later. It is the presence of these necessary extras that explains why congregate housing facilities like the Residence are frequently referred to as "housing with help" for that is exactly what it is. As in most apartment buildings, each apartment has a kitchen, and most of the residents routinely prepare most of their meals. Should a resident not want to cook—or perhaps not feel up to the task—there is also a central dining room where meals can be purchased for a nominal fee, and non-resident friends can be entertained. To people living by themselves, eating in the dining room offers an appetizing alternative to eating alone (a not) always pleasant prospect for many) and an added opportunity to socialize with their neighbors. There are, of course, other occasions for socializing since the building contains facilities for recreational and other group activities. Unless their condition is severe enough to require the sophisticated medical technology of a hospital, residents don't necessarily have to leave home to receive medical attention when and if illness strikes. Except for a ten-day stay in a local hospital's coronary care unit, Evelyn's sister was cared for entirely within the Residence's walls during those long months after her health began to decline. Oil good days, she remained in her own apartment where she was visited by her personal physician and the building's nurses; on bad days, she stayed in the clinic where she could receive the closer supervision she needed. When the end finally came, she was in familiar surroundings close to her friends, neighbors and loved ones who reflected that her days at the Residence had been among the happiest in her life. It would be nice to be able to close this column by reporting that congregate housing facilities exist in plentiful numbers across the country and are available to v older people of all income levels, but that is not the case. Most facilities like the Residence are built and operated by private, non-profit organizations, and the rents reflect the need for these operations to break even "each year. Fortunately, Congress is on the verge of passing legislation that would make the vital services of "housing with help" available to residents of public housing projects while financing the development of pew congregate housing facilities for lowand-middle-income elderly. This action is long overdue, but at least it's a step in the right direction. (Cyril F.
