July kicks off busy season
July is always an exciting
month in Ocean City and began
this year with a weekend
crowded with events to please
all ages and tastes.
A special event this year was
the historic inauguration of a
new' mayor-council form of
government on July 1 at noon.
Hundreds of guests attended
the event and remained afterwards
for a brunch provided
not by the taxpayers but by the
new council members and
mayor.
On the same day, young
anglers got a chance to show.
their «fcni« at the surf fishing
tournament held from 1:30 to 4
pjn. on the beach between the
Longport Bridge and stone
jetty. Contest is open each year
to those between 8 and 16 years
of age.
For the wind surfing enthusiasts,
an exhibition was
held at the 6th St. beach from
11:30 am. to 3 p.m. In the
evening, the Lu Lu Chanters
performed at the Music Pier.
Sunday, July 2, marked the
start of the regularly
scheduled, Sunday through
Thursday performances of the
Ocean Gty Pops Orchestra
under the direction of conductor
John Warrington.
If you're a parade fancier,
the South Ocean City Improvement
Association each
year sponsors its colorful
Fourth of July bike parade, a
popular neighborhood affair,
starting at 40th St. and ending
at 59th St. ,
On July 4, "America's
greatest family resort"
celebrates an old fashioned 4th
of July with fireworks, a
Dixieland band, kite flying
contest and a frisbee demonstration
by the "Seaside Saucer
Tbssers" of Ocean City.
The Muskrat Ramblers
provided a conceit and at 9
p.m. the fireworks began.
Admission is free.
Friday, July 7, the "over 21"
crowd tripped the light fantastic
to the music of JP. & the
Skylarks at the Music Pier in a
city-sponsored ballroom dance,
while earlier in the evening the
recreation department sponsored
a contest for twins.

Photographers from throughout
the east competed on
Saturday, July 8, in the Sixth
Annual Boardwalk
Photography Show, with
•exhibits along the boardwalk
from 10th St. south. Cash prizes
were awarded for the amateur
and professional work Judged
best in show, with ribbons for
those photos selected as outstandtag
by the judges.
Broad Street came to the
boardwalk July 8 when the
always popular Ferko String
Band again performed in
concert at the Music Pier for
the beneift of the Rotary
Charities of Ocean City.

The Forty-Niners of West
Chester appeared at the Music
Pier, Friday evening, July 14
and on the 15th Ocean City
hosted the Miss Cape May
County Pageant.
July 19 those artists who
specialize to a medium wHch is
too soon washed away by the
tide, worked in a sand sculpting
contest.
The Hobo Band from Pitman,
an old favorite of Music Pier
audiences, again delighted fans
on Friday, July 21, at the pier.
At 6 p.m. a Freckle Contest was
held on the pier. Spotted kids of
all ages were welcome to enter.
Saturday, July 22, the Annual
raght In Venice Festival, one of
themajoreventaof the summer
season was held. The evening
features a boat parade, starting
at dusk on Ocean City's bay
front and a contest for the best
decorated homes on the bay or
in themany lagoons in the area.
At the same time on the pier, a
square dance group twirled for
those more interested in terpsichore
than boating.
Another perennial favorite,
the U.S. Air Force Band appeared
on July 28, in a free
concert at the pier; Saturday
the 29th, the Trinity Singers
raised their voices in harmony
with the sea in a Music Pier
performance.
Most Friday and Saturday
events on the Music Pier
subject to a minimal charge to
help defray expenses, but
nightly concerts by the Ocean
City Pops Orchestra remain
free as do those of military
