stellate hairs and sessile glands outside; marginal female<br />

florets 3–5, narrowly clavate, tapering above, ca. 1.7 mm, apex<br />

minutely 3-toothed; disk florets many, tubular, 1.8–2 mm, 5lobed.<br />

Achenes narrowly obovoid, 1–1.3 mm, glabrous, inconspicuously<br />

obtusely 2- or 3-angular, apex truncate. Pappus<br />

absent.<br />

Dry mountain valleys, old dry riverbeds; 1000–1500 m. Xinjiang<br />

Subshrubs, 40–55 cm tall; old branches grayish; year-old<br />

branches with lower parts straw-colored, upper parts pale green,<br />

scattered stellate pubescent. Middle stem leaves sessile; leaf<br />

blade spatulate or oblanceolate, 1–3 × 0.7–1.5 cm, apex 3–<br />

5-partite, rarely pinnatisect, sparsely stellate pubescent; upper<br />

stem leaves entire. Synflorescence a dense flat-topped fascicle<br />

sometimes with additional axillary capitula below. Capitula 3–<br />

5(–8). Involucre cupular, 2–3 mm in diam.; phyllaries in 2–4<br />

rows, margin scarious, outer phyllaries suborbicular, inner ones<br />

broadly ovate. Florets yellow, exterior scattered stellate pubescent;<br />

marginal female florets 3–5, ascidiform, tapering above,<br />

3-denticulate; disk florets many, tubular. Achenes ovoid, 1–1.2<br />

mm.<br />

Barren rocky slopes, rocky floors of gorges; 800–2000 m. Xinjiang<br />

Herbs, perennial, with procumbent rhizomes; indumentum absent or of basifixed and medifixed hairs. Leaves alternate, entire or<br />

pinnatipartite. Synflorescence a lax, ± flat-topped cyme, often reduced to solitary capitulum. Capitula heterogamous, radiate. Involucre<br />

coryliform; phyllaries in 2 or 3 rows, scarious margins brown or dark brown. Receptacle convex, epaleate. Marginal florets in 1<br />

row, female, usually sterile; lamina white or reddish. Disk florets many, yellow, bisexual; corolla tubular, apex 5-lobed. Anther bases<br />

obtuse, apical appendage ovate or elliptic-ovate. Style branches linear, apex truncate. Achenes distinctly 8–12-ribbed, with apical<br />

rim. Corona absent.<br />

Two species: China, Japan, Korea, Russia; Europe; one species in China.<br />

rhizomes; stems erect, usually clustered, unbranched except for<br />

synflorescence, pubescent or glabrous. Basal and lower stem<br />

leaves withered by anthesis. Middle stem leaves sessile; leaf<br />

blade elliptic or lanceolate, 5–8 × 2–4 cm, pinnatipartite below<br />

middle, abaxially gland-dotted, adaxially asperous with acute<br />

papillae; terminal and lateral lobes ± linear, lateral lobes 1–3paired.<br />

Synflorescence a terminal flat-topped cyme. Capitula 1–<br />

8, long pedunculate. Involucre coryliform, 1–1.5 cm in diam.;<br />

phyllaries in 2 or 3 rows, abaxially glabrous or nearly so, scarious<br />

margin brown or dark brown, outer phyllaries linear-lanceolate,<br />

inner ones narrowly elliptic. Ray florets: limb white, 1–<br />

2 cm, apex 2- or 3-denticulate. Disk florets yellow, 5-lobed.<br />
