Herbs or dwarf subshrubs, caespitose, 10–15 cm tall, with<br />

horizontally creeping thick woody rootstock and branches,<br />

stems covered with broad dry leaf bases, most parts densely<br />

gray or yellowish silky-villous. Basal and middle stem leaves:<br />

petiole 0.4–0.8 cm; leaf blade suborbicular, flabellate, or reniform,<br />

(0.4–)0.6–1.2 × 0.5–1 cm, 2-pinnatisect; segments in 2(or<br />

3) pairs, narrowly oblanceolate, 3–5-lobulate; lobules linear<br />

or linear-lanceolate, 1–2 × 0.5–1 mm, apex obtuse. Uppermost<br />

leaves and leaflike bracts minute, pinnatisect or 3-lobed or entire.<br />

Synflorescence spikelike or racemelike. Capitula usually<br />

6–9, subsessile, remote, secund. Involucre hemispheric or subglobose,<br />

(3–)5–10 mm in diam.; outer phyllaries sparsely hairy,<br />

scarious margin broad, lacerate, purple or dark brown, apex<br />

acute; receptacle hemispheric, pubescent. Florets many, all fertile.<br />

Marginal female florets 10–18, (2 or)3- or 4-toothed. Disk<br />

florets 50–80, bisexual; corolla limb purple. Achenes brown,<br />

obovoid, ca. 0.8 mm. Fl. and fr. Jul–Oct.<br />

elliptic, 5–10 × 1–2 cm, 2- or 3-pinnatisect; segments 7–13<br />

pairs, 1–3-lobulate; lobules narrowly linear-lanceolate or linear,<br />

3–5 × 1–1.5 mm. Middle and uppermost leaves 1- or 2-pinnatisect;<br />

leaflike bracts pinnatisect or entire. Synflorescence racemelike,<br />

sometimes dense and spikelike. Capitula shortly pedunculate,<br />

gray and arachnoid tomentose, glabrescent. Basal leaves ± in<br />

rosette, soon withering; petiole 5–13 cm; leaf blade ovate or<br />

broadly ovate, 11–18 × 8–16 cm, 3- or 4-pinnatisect; lobules<br />

filiform, (10–)15–30 × 0.5–1.5 mm. Middle and upper stem<br />

leaves: leaf blade broadly ovate, 3–5 × 3–5 cm, 2- or 3-pinnatisect;<br />

segments 3 or 4 pairs; lobules filiform, 5–15 × 0.5–1.5<br />

mm. Uppermost leaves and leaflike bracts 3–5-pinnatisect or<br />

entire; lobes of entire leaves 1–3 cm. Synflorescence a panicle<br />

with ascending main branches and many short lateral racemes.<br />

Capitula pedunculate, nodding. Involucre ovoid or obovoid, 2–<br />

3(–4) mm in diam.; receptacle pubescent. Marginal female florets<br />

2–5. Disk florets 8–15, bisexual. Achenes obovoid, slightly<br />

compressed. Fl. and fr. Aug–Oct.<br />

The original concept of Artemisia fauriei also included Faurie<br />

361, now the type of A. nakaii, which differs by its biennial habit and<br />

basal leaves with shorter, 6–15 mm, filiform lobules.<br />

Herbs, biennial, 30–60 cm tall, long branched, densely<br />

arachnoid and sericeous pubescent or glabrescent. Basal leaves<br />

± forming rosettes; petiole 4–10 cm; leaf blade suborbicular or<br />

ovate, 8–15 × 8–15 cm, 3-pinnatisect; lobules filiform, 6–15<br />

mm. Lower and middle stem leaves: leaf blade orbicular or<br />

ovate, 1.5–8 × 0.8–1.5 cm, 1- or 2-pinnatisect; segments 2 or 3<br />

pairs; lobules linear or filiform, 4–15 × ca. 0.5 mm. Uppermost<br />

leaves and leaflike bracts 1(or 2)-pinnatisect. Synflorescence a<br />

narrow to broad panicle. Capitula nodding. Involucre ellipsoid<br />

or obconical, (2–)3(–4) mm in diam.; phyllaries minutely tomentose,<br />

± glabrescent; receptacle white pubescent. Marginal<br />

female florets 2–5. Disk florets 8–16, bisexual. Achenes obovoid-ellipsoid.<br />

Fl. and fr. Aug–Oct.<br />

Sand banks along rivers, grasslands; low elevations. Hebei, Liaoning,<br />

SE Nei Mongol [Korea].<br />

Artemisia nakaii is based on the gathering Faurie 361, originally<br />

included within A. fauriei, which differs by its perennial habit and basal<br />

leaves with longer, (10–)15–30 mm, filiform lobules.<br />
