Herbs, perennial, 80–200 cm tall, pubescent. Middle stem<br />

and upper leaves ± sessile; leaf blade elliptic-ovate or ovate, 6–<br />

12 × 4–10 cm, abaxially white tomentose, 1(or 2)-pinnatipartite;<br />

segments 1 or 2 pairs, 3-parite or entire; lobules or lobes<br />

linear-lanceolate, 45–80 × 4–6 mm, acuminate apically. Leaflike<br />

bracts linear-lanceolate. Synflorescence a broad panicle.<br />

Capitula shortly pedunculate. Involucre ovoid-campanulate,<br />

attenuate, entire or occasionally few serrate. Uppermost leaves<br />

and leaflike bracts lanceolate, 3-cleft or entire. Synflorescence a<br />

large, often rather narrow, panicle, main branches usually ascending;<br />

ultimate branches short, secund, without bracts. Involucre<br />

oblong, 2.5–3 mm in diam.; outer phyllaries arachnoid tomentose.<br />

Marginal female florets 4–6; corolla apex lacerate.<br />

Disk florets 8–14, bisexual. Achene obovoid, 1.5–2 mm. 2n =<br />

51–54.<br />

Roadsides, shrublands, forest margins, wet meadows, riverside<br />

forests; 300–2800 m. Anhui, Hunan, Jiangxi [Japan, E Russia].<br />

“Artemisia montana Schlechtendal” (Ledebour, Fl. Ross. 2: 591.<br />

1845) is merely a herbarium name cited as a synonym and was therefore<br />

not validly published (Vienna Code, Art. 34.1(c)).<br />

leaf blade oblong, ovate, or elliptic, 5–10 × 2–3(–4.5) cm, abaxially<br />

densely gray or yellowish tomentose, adaxially sparsely<br />

tomentose, 2- or 3-pinnatisect or partite; segments (4 or)5 or 6<br />

pairs, ovate or elliptic-ovate; lobules lanceolate or linear-lanceolate,<br />

margin few serrate, apex acuminate; rachis narrowly<br />

winged. Uppermost leaves pinnatipartite; leaflike bracts 3–5partite<br />

or entire. Synflorescence a narrowly cylindric interrupted,<br />

racemelike panicle, 15–20 × 1.5–2.5 cm; branches 2–3<br />

cm, erect to somewhat appressed spicate. Capitula sessile. Involucre<br />

globose or hemispheric, 4–6 mm in diam.; outer phyllaries<br />

purplish, sparsely pubescent, margin not hyaline scarious,<br />

apex acute. Receptacle ± convex, glabrous. Florets purplish.<br />

Marginal female florets 15–20; corolla linear-tubular,<br />

glandular, 2-toothed. Disk florets bisexual 30–35; corolla clavate-tubular,<br />

base glandular, apex very sparsely hairy. Achene<br />

brown, ± cylindric, ca. 1.75 mm. Fl. and fr. Jul–Oct. 2n = 18.<br />

Slopes, terraces, valleys, rocky hills, subalpine steppes, subalpine<br />
