Herbs, perennial, 7–25 cm tall; stems solitary or clustered,<br />

unbranched, villous with long simple white hairs, especially in<br />

upper part and near capitula. Basal leaves: petiole 1–3 cm; leaf<br />

blade elliptic or narrowly elliptic, 1.5–7 × 1–1.5 cm, 2-pinnatisect,<br />

both surfaces green, sparsely villous or glabrous; primary<br />

lateral segments 5–15-paired; ultimate segments linear. Stem<br />

leaves similar, sessile. Capitula solitary, terminal. Involucre coryliform,<br />

10–20 mm in diam.; phyllaries in 4 rows, scarious<br />

margin dark brown or brown, outer phyllaries linear-lanceolate,<br />

ca. 6 mm, middle and inner ones narrowly lanceolate or broadly<br />

linear, 7–8 mm, outer and middle ones abaxially sparsely villous,<br />

inner ones abaxially glabrous. Ray florets orange-red or<br />

absent; lamina when present linear or broadly linear, ca. 2 cm,<br />

apex 3-denticulate. Achenes ca. 3 mm. Corona ca. 0.1 mm, divided<br />

to base. Fl. and fr. Jul–Sep.<br />
