the mind: when it is calm, we see what our own nature is; we do<br />

not mix ourselves with the modification of the mind; but remain<br />

Meditation presupposes a subject, an object and an experiential<br />

process. Though these three combine to form a unit, the emphasis<br />

is on the process, which transforms and is the medium of<br />

'awareness' and ultimate realization. Pranayama, dharana or<br />

concentration, and meditation itself are phases of the same process.<br />

Each successive phase is a subtle refinement of the former. If a<br />

single act of attention is focusing one's mind on a particular object,<br />

idea or feeling, then concentration is an intensification of the same<br />

process by blocking off our awareness of every distraction from the
