Runic relationships can also be found in the shapes of the staves. This is particularly clear when
one stave is put in the place of another, as in the case of the Elder elhaz replacing mannaz in the Younger
Futhark or the alternate Elder ingwaz set for the Anglo- Saxon jera. One of the better examples of the use
of shape-determined relationships is the alu formula, a common runic inscription which calls on the flow
of magical energy, vital force and inspiration. Laguz is the life-force flowing upward; ansuz shows the
same shape effective on and transformed through both the conscious and the subconscious; uruz shows
this power flowing through every level of being as a vital, shaping energy. The formula laukaz, “leek,”
also begins with this combination of like-shaped staves, adding the craft of kenaz and the guarding might
and upward-reaching spiritual power of elhaz to the basic idea. The fact that each word also has a fitting
meaning-alu being a drink that both strengthens and inspires, tied to the source-thought of laguz by that
rune’s use in brewing magic, and laukaz being the quick-growing, vital leek which was also used in
kennings for “warrior”-adds a further dimension of might to these inscriptions.
