Tell her your goal, singing the names of each of the runes softly, and ask for her help. Wait until you
feel some sort of answer. It may be as clear as a voice in your mind; it may be a soft inner tugging or
urging in this direction or that, or any of a number of other things.
II. Follow your sense of where to go until you reach a tree past which you feel you should not walk
any further. Sit before it, facing north. With your palms on its trunk, breathe deeply and clear your mind
until you feel that you are touching the indwelling wight. Sing,
“Hail to thee, tree-sib! A gift for a gift
Give I at need that this work be wrought.”
Whisper your purpose and need to the tree, singing the runes into it.
Hail, warder of wisdom’s dark well.
I have come to thee in the hidden hour
Beneath the root of Ygg’s rune-ridden tree
Where Odhinn bought his draught with an eye.
Mimir, warder of memory’s might
My ancestors’ draught I come to drain,
The waters of wisdom I come to drink.”
VI. Meditate on the cup or horn until you can see that its rim is the rim of a stone well, with a great
evergreen rising from it, its roots concealed in the well’s depths. As you slowly drain the contents of the
cup in one draught, see the world of what is around you: all that has gone to make up that-which-is alive
and stretching outward into becoming, as the needles of the tree stretch outward, nourished by the water
flowing up from the hidden roots and through all the layers of wood to shape them.
VII. Chant:
“Mimir I thank, with hallowed draught homeward
Fare I, all filled with memory’s might.”
VIII. Draw the energy of the circle in or return it to the universe; if you used a physical circle, erase
or counter-trace it before stepping out. Extinguish the candle with a brief galdr such as “Candle-flame
kindled now curl back to hiding,” and the coals with, perhaps, “Fire-might back to Muspellheim fare.”
III. Pour the mead or ale into your hallowed vessel and make the sign of the Hammer or widdershins
swastika over it and the bread. Say,
“Hallowed the holy drink I give,
Hallowed be this bread
Weal it work with glad heart given
Given, a gift for a gift.”
Set the bread down and pour the drink out at the tree’s roots.
IV. Find the branch that seems best-fitted for your use. If possible, this should be one whose pruning
will only help the growth of the tree. Trace the runes you wish to use over it with your gandr, singing
their names and a galdr telling the goal of your working. If you are doing this rite in two parts, tell the tree
when you are going to return to cut it, continuing with step Vat sunrise or sunset. Do not speak to anyone
while leaving or coming back.
