12: OTHER MAGICAL SYMBOLS
Along with the runes, the Teutonic people used a rich array of other symbols which were mighty
emblems of both religion and magic. Most of these are older than the runes, having been used during the
Bronze Age (in Scandinavia, roughly 160OA50 B.C.E.), but their use continued through the runic period.
AEGISHJALMAR
(Helm of Terror)
This symbol appears carved beside the figures of
warriors; a more complex form is still used in
Icelandic magic. It is worn or traced between the
brows to cause terror to your foes [1]. The dragon
Fafnir wore it while guarding his hoard. [2]
THE SUNWHEEL
The sun-wheel is one of the oldest symbols of
Northern Europe. It represents the power of the sun
as an ordering force, the sun in its daily wagonround
through the sky (raidho). Also appears as
solar cross.
