Muspellheim! Vanheim! Niflheim! Jotunheim!” Pause for a moment of absolute silence, then strike the
cup again, crying, “Mimir!”
V. Staring into the waters of the cup or horn, chant so that your breath stirs the surface of the water
“Hail, Mimir, wisest of the etin-kind,
Hail to thee, Bolthorn’s famous son,
Hail, warder of wisdom’s dark well.
I have come to thee in the hidden hour
Beneath the root of Ygg’s rune-ridden tree
Where Odhinn bought his draught with an eye.
Mimir, warder of memory’s might
My ancestors’ draught I come to drain,
The waters of wisdom I come to drink.”
VI. Meditate on the cup or horn until you can see that its rim is the rim of a stone well, with a great
evergreen rising from it, its roots concealed in the well’s depths. As you slowly drain the contents of the
cup in one draught, see the world of what is around you: all that has gone to makeup that-which-is alive
and stretching outward into becoming, as the needles of the tree stretch outward, nourished by the water
flowing up from the hidden roots and through all the layers of wood to shape them.
VII. Chant:
“Mimir I thank, with hallowed draught homeward Fare I, all filled with memory’s might.”
VIII. Draw the energy of the circle in or return it to the universe; if you used a physical circle, erase
or counter-trace it before stepping out. Extinguish the candle with a brief galdr such as “Candle-flame
kindled now curl back to hiding,” and the coals with, perhaps, “Fire-might back to Muspellheim fare.”
RITE OF TREE-GIF
Purpose: To get wood for a taufr (talisman), gandr (wand), stave, ritual fire, or any other magical or
religious purpose.
Earthly Tools: Sax or hallowed axe, horn/cup, mead or ale, small loaf of bread, gandr.
Time: Sunset or sunrise
This rite may be done either in two parts or as a whole. Generally it is best to find the tree when one
has plenty of time and can concentrate on one’s magical sense of which tree is right, rather than feeling
hurried by the movement of the sun. Also, trees process knowledge more slowly than humans, so it is
kinder to give your wooded brothers and sisters a little time to prepare for being cut, as well as working
the first might you put into the tree more thoroughly into the wood. This is not, however, absolutely
needful.
I. Go silently out to a wooded place and sit down on the ground, facing north with your palms on the
earth. Breathe deeply and regularly, concentrating on the earth beneath you: fruitful mother, keeper of
seeds, womb and tomb of all that lives. Do this until you feel her might thrumming through your hands
and body, until you feel that you are touching the deep, hidden, and silent wisdom of Mother Nerthus.
Whisper softly,
164
“Hail, holy earth who givest to all,
All sib, who spring Sons and daughters, from thee.”
