upon the bones of a suitable creature, it is best that the animal have died naturally. If not, it must not have
been killed for sport but for a needful purpose such as food, and you must perform a fitting rite of thanks
and lay the animal's spirit to rest before attempting any other hallowings.
When the raw wood for the gandr has been taken from the tree (see Chapter 21, Rite of Tree-Gift),
it is necessary to strip the bark off, preferably using no tools other than the sax, and sand the wood
smooth. You may at this time make an oil by carefully heating (though not boiling!) appropriate herbs in
linseed oil, straining it clear through a coffee filter, and charging it with the force of the futhark either in a
single rite or nightly from New Moon to Full. The wand should then be rubbed with this oil until it
gleams. This technique can be used in the making of talismans as well.
The runes carved upon the gandr can range from a simple carving of the futhark to whatever the
vitki's mind can come up with. It is suggested that the numerical value of the inscription be either a
multiple of 24 (the futhark) or 9. Adding the vitki's own name to a runic inscription was frequently done
and it is fitting to work it into the carving on the gandr, as that tool is a representation of the vitki's will.
In hallowing the gandr, you should call upon Odhinn Galdrfadhir (father of magical songs) and the
Norns.
THE HORN OR CUP
This tool is used to hold water, ale, or mead as fitting to various rites. A natural horn is best, as this
by its very being refers to the aurouchs of uruz, the shaping life-force which works from the horn.
If you find a natural horn which has not been prepared, you will need to sand it down and polish
with steel wool, then jeweler's rouge. To clean the inside it is best to pour boiling water down the horn
and let it sit till cool, then repeat several times to sterilize and clean out debris. During this process, you
should intone the rune uruz and trace it over the horn, visualizing the waters of the rune flowing through,
cleansing it and filling it with power. Finally, you should melt paraffin in a double boiler-being very
careful not to let it catch fire, as it is highly flammable-pour it into the mouth of a horn, and swirl it
around until the entire inside is coated, pouring out any excess wax before it can set.
The runes can be scrimshawed onto a horn fairly easily with the sax. Depending on the material of
the cup, professional etching may be needed. The runes laguz, uruz, and perthro should be prominent in
the inscription. A sample might be UR ALU URUZ POUR URUZ URDHR URUZ POWER URUZ,
written around the rim of the vessel thus:
which adds up numerically to 216 or 9 x 24, the futhark multiplied by the number of wholeness, and also
contains 9 uruz-runes.
Thorsson also recommends that the vitki have a horn or cup with the word Odhroerir (the mead of
poetry) etched on it, in runes and drink mead out of this for Odhinnic inspiration.[1] This can be made
into a mighty rite on its own.
THE STAFF
The staff can be seen as a larger gandr, being made and hallowed in much the same manner. It is
useful in drawing power from and faring through the higher and lower worlds. It shows the vitki's
unshakeable will piercing through all the realms. At the most elaborate extreme, you might carve an
eagle at the top and a dragon at the bottom in reference to the World-Tree. This tool is not however, as
necessary as sax, gandr, or horn/cup; use of it will largely depend on individual preference.
FIREPOT CANDLES
A firepot with coals is good to have, if possible. It signifies the quickening power of
Muspellheim.2 Recels (incense) is burned on the coals. Also, a newly hallowed item may be passed
