FARING FORTH: THE WORKING
Earthly Tools: Gandr, sax (held in the hands); if the circle is large enough, the staff should be used in
place of the gandr.
Recels (by choice): Will vary according to the faring's goal, but should always contain a great deal of
mugwort.
Garb: Seidh-robes, vitki's garb, or skyclad. There is reference to Freyja using a cloak of falcon feathers
to fly through the worlds, and using a mask or similar symbolic garment to take the spiritual shape of an
animal is a frequent shamanic practice. Should it be wished, if one has a hide of the creature one is going
to become - an item of clothing with a claw, tooth, feather, etc., or a mask - one can enspell that item with
the power of holding the animal's shape, so that simply by putting it on one's spirit can be shaped and
freed. The runes fehu (for the hamingja-force), ansuz (for the loosing of the soul and travelling on the
wind-roads), and raidho (for the faring-forth and to ward one on the way) are good for this working;
others may also suggest themselves to the aspiring seidhkona or -madhr. Runic aids should be worked
before the first faring; the filling of the garment with the shape-power should be done at its end, in the
same way that one charges an item with a magical persona. The garment is, however, not necessary to this
particular craft.
It is wise and prudent to do all one's trance-workings from the inside of a warded circle. The empty
lich is vulnerable to anything that might wander by, and if the soul should find a swift withdrawal
necessary, it is much, much better to have a circle to come back into. Of course, one's working room
should already be well warded, but the extra guarding is still good when one is leaving part of oneself
open.
Time: At choice; however, this work may be easier at first if done at night.
Circle-Walking: Deosil, if faring to the elemental worlds or above Midgardhr; widdershins, if faring to
Svartalfheim or Hel or if one will be calling upon the hidden powers in one's workings outside the lich.
Rite:
129
1. Circle Rite (see Rites)
2. (if recels is used) Light the coals, chanting,
Fire from Muspeliheim free recels' might
Forth fare the flame-clouds ready my road
Wafting, shall ward me in my wide wanderings.
Walk the circle thrice, bearing the recels.
3. Facing northward, raise head and hands and chant:
Heidh, I hail thee hide-wise in faring
Woman of seidhr's secret soul ways.
Fearless, I fare forth hide and hugr flying
To see and shape things hidden to see and shape my will!
4. Lie down on your back, sax in right hand and gandr or staff in left, making very sure all body
parts, hair, etc. are within the circle and out of danger from the recels burner. Close eyes and
breathe deeply, setting up a regular rhythm. Feel your hide within your lich, the two shaped the
same, the hamingja-force pulsing through both with breath and blood-but different-the one finer,
freer, bound only to the other with a silver cord connecting the navel. Now picture in your mind
the shape of the animal you want to take. Breathe it into yourself { feeling your arms become
wings or hands narrowing to paws, feathers or fur sprouting or skin hardening to scales, face
