eing is desired. The second, permanent concealment, is done (as a part of ritual outside of practical
considerations) for the purpose of making the working more effective in the hidden realms of power. An
item may be physically hidden in the earth, beneath the floorboards of a house and so on, or runes may be
concealed by numerical encoding or by other means such as "ice-runes," in which row and placement are
indicated by tallies of isa-runes, the larger showing the row and the smaller showing the placement in the
row. Other runes have been used in this manner, but isa, being simplest is most common. An example of
this can be seem in the encoded name of Odhinn:
/////////////////////////////// (0=3:8; D=3:7; 1=2:3; N=2:2; N=2:2)
The aettir can also be reversed so that 0=1:8 and so on. There are several forms of runic encoding which
work on this principle.
The power of secrecy is in some ways similar to the power of silence; it concentrates the energy
and attention into the working and separates it from any distraction so that it can pierce more effectively
through the hidden realms of being. For this reason it is also a good idea to keep one's magical tools
wrapped in black cloth or kept in a special box when not in use. Silk is preferred by many traditionalist
Western magicians because of its value as a psychic insulator; linen is preferred by traditionalist vitkar
because of its association with Hel/Holda, the Concealing Mother.
Binding and unbinding play a fairly important part in ritual because of the direct control of energy
they represent. The act of tying a knot or tracing a circle about something is one of the most immediately
powerful ways to achieve mastery and hold force in, while the untying of a ritual knot generates a sudden
rush of energy which should be directed at the moment of untying. The traditional example of this is the
well-known figure of the weather- worker loosing and binding the winds by tying and untying the mouth
or a bag or a knotted string-a "wind" being any rush of power.
FIRE AND WATER; BREWING
Fire and water or other liquids often appear in ritual workings, usually as complementary forces.
Both are, of course, tools of cleansing and are frequently used as such, although in runic practice the
correspondence would be to kenaz or nauthiz for fire and to uruz for water, rather than to the elemental
fehu and laguz. In using a flame or sprinkling water for ritual cleansing, you would want to make that
distinction in your mental structure and verbal formulae. The elemental forces are used for direct transfer
of life and hamingjaforce, fehu being the quickening of life and hamingja-power and laguz the basic lifeenergy.
The use of air in this setting, of course, would be as the magical breath carrying the life-power of
spirit.
Running water plays an important part in Teutonic magic. Whenever the use of water is called for
in a ritual, it is best to go out before sunrise and gather running water from either one or three streams, or
else to gather the dew off the grass, since both run- fling water and dew have the particular active quality
which is so mighty in the Well of Wyrd-they are said to bring life and renew the strength of youth.
Running water can be used to either cleanse something enchanted or to simply carry woe-working
energies away from you.
The use of water or other liquids, especially alcohol, as a vehicle for runic forces is an ancient
tradition; both the highest myths and the simplest charms hold drinks of power into which runes have
been scraped and over which galdrar have been sung. Liquid is, in fact, an ideal condenser of energies,
being by nature highly receptive and manipulable.
If you have access to a shop which sells materials for home- brewing, you will find it vastly
preferable to brew your own ritual mead and ale, performing a rite which climaxes with the adding of the
yeast to the mixture. Runes may be daily traced and vibrated into the froth of the yeast on top, and
appropriate herbs may be added to the drink as well, either by steeping them in it or by making a fairly
strong tea with the water which is used for brewing. This may in fact make the brewing of mead easier, as
it is sometimes difficult to get honey and water alone to ferment. You should be very careful that the
