THE SHIP
The ship is the emblem of passing between the
worlds, usually at death. The sun-wheel has also
been drawn in a ship, and it may be that the wagon
shows its daily faring across the sky while the ship
shows its passage beneath the earth at night. The
ship is an emblem of fertility as well, as is the
wagon.
FOOTPRINT
The bare footprint is a fertility symbol associated
with the Vanic cult from the earliest times (see
Chapter 17, Njord).

SPIRAL
The spiral represents the coiling layers of thatwhich-is,
Serpents are often drawn coiled into
spirals, and in the runic era it became fairly
common to carve runes inside the outline of a
wyrm.
