The rune tiwaz is the rune of stability and ordering force. The star of the Anglo-Saxon Rune
Poem is probably the North Star, which always serves as an absolute indicator of direction.
One of the greatest sides of tiwaz’s being is its socio-religious nature as a rune of law. Tiwaz is
associated with the Thing, the general assembly at which justice was done and community decisions
made. tn this context, it is the complement of raidho. Elements of this may be seen in the story of the
Fenris-Wolf. Tyr must take the weight of dealing with the Wolf upon himself because it, as the
embodiment of the forces of chaos, is chiefly his enemy at this point (it becomes Odhinn’s doom at
Ragnarok because the Wolf is essentially part of Odhinn’s own nature; it is the orlog he has laid for
himself). In spite of the fact that betraying the oath the gods have sworn to the Wolf is in the best interests
of all life, Tyr still must pay for the deception with his hand, as he is the god of oaths, honor, and absolute
justice.
Tiwaz is the main rune used by or on behalf of those who were not themselves greatly skilled in
runeword. It was usual for warriors to, as the valkyrja Sigrdrifa tells Sigurdhr, “call twice upon Tyr.”2
The rune was inscribed on the hilt of the sword to instill honor and courage in the welder, and on one or
both sides of the blade to fill it with Tyr’s victorious might. Battle was seen as a judgment (from which
the medieval trial by combat developed), and hence the use of the rune tiwaz made the warrior worthy,
ensuring that he would be judged the better man and so win the fight.
The rune tiwaz is used to obtain absolute justice and to strengthen a person or thing in the
physical realm by filling it with spiritual and moral force. It is, of course, called upon for victory and is
one of the mightiest runes in dealing directly with earthly problems as well as magical struggles.
In the personal sphere, tiwaz develops courage, strength, and honor. It makes you aware of your
duty to others, especially where the social order as a whole is concerned. Tiwaz can be used for stability
and to bind the unruly and woe-working forces within until you have developed the strength to meld these
sides into your whole bemg (wunjo). Tiwaz is used to bring about and maintain order.
In workings of woe, tiwaz instills rigidity, prejudice, and loss of perspective. It may be used
directly against another in revenge-defense magic (casting the spear over) if the cause is truly just.
Tiwaz can be used to force someone to fulfill an oath or to bind any undisciplined energy.
Ritually, tiwaz is represented by the central pillar of the temple or its symbolic representation.
The stones associated with tiwaz are bloodstone and hematit~both of which grant wisdom as well
as strength in battl~and ruby, which is associated with leadership and warrior might. Star ruby is
especially appropriate to this rune.
Tiwaz: Meditation
You are floating in what seems to be a pool of utterly formless chaos. All around you, shapes are halfpulling
themselves from the restless mass and collapsing back into it, their borders flowing and engulfing
each other. Strange sounds, gratings, and grunts and sloshing noises float through this realm of
formlessness and confusion. You long for something solid to rest your feet on, for more light than the
shifting flashes that pulse irregularly through the sea of chaos about you, and for a clearer air than this
thick hell-brew of stinking fog and dust.
Looking up, you see a single silver gleam through the seething ocean of madness. You expect it
to wink out and be lost, but it glows ever more strongly, one fixed single star shining straight down
through the shifting formlessness. As it brightens, the writhing liquid slowly solidifies to viscous mud
beneath your feet, then to solid ground, as the air clears about you. The single beam of the star has
become a great pillar of light, holding up the dark blue arch of the heavens above the newly-formed earth.
You breathe deeply of the clear air, staring up at the star and glad of the solid ground under you.
Something growls behind you. Turning to look, you see a wolf as big as a horse bounding over
the ground towards you, its teeth flashing in the starlight. It leaves a wake of eddying, shuddering chaos
behind it. At the last moment it changes course, and you see that it is about to attack the pillar that holds
the sky up. You lookaround desperately for a weapon, but all you see is a rope at the foot of the pillar.
You grab the rope and swing it at the wolf. It backs off, snarling, then charges right at you. Stepping
aside, you swing the rope around its neck with one hand and grab it with the other, pulling the two ends
tight to choke it. Although it shakes itself mightily, flinging you about, it cannot dislodge the rope or
