attle of Clontarf twelve valkyrjur are seen weaving a web of human entrails, the reels and shuttles of
which are arrows and a sword, the spindles spears, and the warp weighted with men's heads. As they
weave they sing a song of prophecy about the battle to come, and finish by tearing the cloth in two - six
carrying one half to the North and six to the south.10
As weavers and choosers of men's deaths, they are associated with the Norns, and Skuld is the
name of a Norn and a valkyrja alike. Only with the aid of the valkyrja can a mortal human cross Bifrost as
has been mentioned earlier. Within Valhalla, they bear drink to Odhinn and the einherjar (his chosen
warriors). The valkyrjur hover invisibly over the heads of their chosen warriors and shield them both in
battle and from magic. They are often said to wear swan dresses when flying out to battle. The valkyrja
Sigrdrifa teaches magical wisdom to Sigurdhr. In the cycle of the Helgi lays and the story of Sigurdhr,
one sees these magical maidens in mortal bodies from which they fare forth to shield the hero who is
destined for them. The hero and his valkyrja are reborn, meet again, and live out their lives together
several times, though his is always shortened by violence either as a direct or an indirect result of his
mating with her.
The valkyrja is best understood as a guardian spirit and personification of that in the soul which is closest
to Odhinn, as both her furor and her mystical wisdom show. Like the fylgja, with whom she has much in
common, she is a semi-independent being who is capable of going forth on her own. She often acts in
ways of which the ordinary person is altogether unaware, except as symbolically shown by the tales of
these battle-maids. One of the greatest goals of the male vitki is to be "wed" to his valkyrja-to consciously
reach her, learn from her, and be led upward by her; the goal of the female vitki is to become consciously
one with her valkyrja-to be a valkyrja in the sense that the title is given to mortal women. Those with a
subtle understanding of this will know that these purposes are not necessary different; but the human
mind is normally so constructed that they call for different forms of symbolic expression.
When the valkyrja is seen, she usually appears as a shiningly fair woman dressed in armor and
carrying weapons. If the weapons are bloody, it foretells a battle.
