clothing put on solely for ritual work is better, because the act of donning this garb aids in concentrating
the mind on both the conscious and the subconscious levels. The exact type of clothing used is not as
overwhelmingly important in Norse magic as in high ceremonial workings, but it is still meaningful.
Traditional Norse clothing-tunic, breeches, hooded cloak-is easy to make and comfortable to wear. The
breeches are traditionally red, the cloak dark blue. A simple robe may also be used at need. One should
bear in mind when choosing colors, designs, etc. for ritual clothing and jewelry, that the more supporting
correspondences one can find in the Teutonic universe and the runes themselves, the more power one will
be able to call into these things. In a sense one can say that the use of ritual garb and a magical name
works in much the same manner as the creation of a magical persona, the difference being that rather than
entering a persona for a single rite or type of rite, one is expressing the wholeness of one's true self with
power in all things.
THE CIRCLE
The use of a circle in magic appears virtually worldwide. It is every bit as traditional in Teutonic magic as
in Western ceremonial workings, serving several essential purposes. First, it separates the vitki from the
mundane world, creating an area which is an all-encompassing microcosm ruled by the vitki's will. It
blocks out both mental and magical forces, concentrating the vitid's mind altogether on her/his purpose.
As an impenetrable boundary, it is a necessary warding against the multitude of hostile/ reactive forces
which the use of magic always draws. It also serves as a focus within which power can be raised
effectively.
The design of a circle can range from a simple ring to an exceedingly elaborate structure, according
to the knowledge and inclination of the vitki. A good simple circle is the rune-ring divided by the aett of
the solarhringar:
