electromagnetic energies.
The point of a terminated crystal works with thurisaz in its ability to meld energies and send them
outward. You may notice the likeness between the shapes of the stave and the crystal’s tip. This shape is a
large part of the power of terminated quartz crystals as a focus for active workings. It may be worthwhile
to meditate on this in conjunction with the forth-rushing nature of thurisaz.
Thurisaz: Meditation
You stand on the side of a rocky mountain, near a glacier of black ice. The earth around you is
covered with jagged gray boulders. Nothing grows here except thistles and tangles of thorn bushes. The
ground is hard and icy beneath your boots; the sky above you is heavy and dark.
The mountain begins to shake beneath you, grinding as it moves. The rumbling earth knocks you
down. You fall painfully among the sharp rocks. Suddenly a spurt of fire bursts through the center of the
glacier. The brilliant flash of light and the deafening thunderclap strike you together. As you blink your
eyes clear of the searing brightness, you see the glacier slowly raising itself from the mountain in the
shape of a huge, manlike wight whose skin is the gray of stone or iron. He raises a great club and roars at
you wordlessly, striding towards you with heavy steps that rattle the rocks. You scramble to your feet and
run farther up the mountain, never more than a few steps from the stone-shattering blows of his mighty
weapon.
Fleeing blindly, you run into an impassable barrier of thorns that snag your skin and hold you fast.
Desperate, you pluck one of the thorns and fling it at the massive club descending towards your head. The
thorn flies straight and true, striking the thurse’s weapon and shattering it to bits. He roars in anguish and
rushes towards you as you throw a second thorn at him. This thorn hits him with a flash like lightning and
his body bursts asunder. Great chunks of stone and shards of red-hot iron fly through the air, but the
thorns about you smash them to dust before they can harm you.
Plucking a third thorn, you hurl it into the heavy, dark clouds above you. Its lightning flash is
answered by the rumbling of great chariot wheels through the sky and the sound of a man’s deep laughter
mingling with the thunder. The heavy chariot bursts through the low clouds, drawn by two wild-eyed
goats with sparks flashing from their hooves and champing teeth. In the chariot you see a burly, muscular
man with fiery red hair and beard, swinging a great iron hammer around his head in an iron-gloved hand.
Thorr raises his hammer in a salute and grins at you, then flings the weapon down to strike the frozen
ground below with a terrible rending crash. Looking down from the mountain, you can see the furrowed
cracks in the icy earth. The hammer returns to Thorr’s hand and he throws it again, shattering the stones
below to dust. Re cracks his whip and the goats turn and gallop up into the sky. Thorr’s third throw
breaks the dark bellies of the clouds into jagged cracks of lightning, striking the ground as a torrential rain
pours down from the sky.
The storm is blindingly intense, but soon over. When the water clears from your eyes, you see that
the sun is shining on the valley beneath you and a thousand shoots of green are already springing up
where Thorr’s hammer struck. Carefully you disentangle yourself from the thorn bush, breaking off one
branch to carry with you. You descend into the newly fruitful valley and back into your own body, feet
firmly planted on the earth, knowing that you hold the lightning-might of thurisaz within you.
