DAGAZ
Galdr-sound; dhaaa-dhaaa-dliaaa (dhi pronounced as thin “the.” Slightly prolonged; loud and clear with a
sharp moment of silence between each sound)
Letter: D, Dli, Th (as in “the,” rather than the th of “thorn”)
(Day) is the lord’s messenger
dear to men
the ruler’s famous light:
mirth and hope to the rich and poor
useful for all.
Anglo-Saxon Rune Poem.
The Teutonic day should not be confused with the current Western idea of day as simply the period of
light. The Norse counted the twenty-four-hour period by nights and measured it by the solarliringar (see
raidho) which was divided into two “days” - sunrise to sunset and sunset to sunrise. Hence the idea of
“day” holds the idea of transition between the time of light and the time of darkness. This thought is also
shown in the story of the birth of Day in the Prose Edda. Night was the dark daughter of a giant called
Norfi. Her first marriage was with a chthonic being named Naglfari (ship of the dead) by whom she bore
a son named Audh (“the wealthy”; fitting when you think of the association of the world beneath the
earth’s surface with treasure). She was next married to Annar (“The Second”), whom other references
hint was Odhinn in one of his many disguises. Their daughter was Jord, the Earth, the mother of many of
the gods and goddesses including Thor and Frigg. Her last mate was Delling (“the Shining One”) who
fathered Day on her, after which both Night and Day were set to ride through the sky, Night on the horse
Hrimfaxi (Frostymane) and Day on the horse Skinfaxi (Shining Mane), This progressive synthesis whkh
leads from the chthonic to the heavenly realms shows the waxing power of synthesis. Night’s first
husband is of a nature not far removed from her own giantish heritage. Her second husband, Odhinn, is
more of an opposite and hence their child is higher and more powerful than the first. Delling is Night’s
exact polar opposite, and their union not only creates the transcendent being Day but ‘Hi the original
participants to the same level of transcendence.
Dagaz is the completion of the processes of gebo and elhaz. The synergy gained by the active
exchange of energies shown in gebo - the “alchemical marriage” - reaches its transcendent substance in
dagaz. This rune may fairly be compared to the spiritual philosopher’s stone. In sexual alchemy, dagaz is
the moment of orgasm in which the goal of the working is made real. As the completion of elhaz – the
moment of unity with the valkyrja and the higher realms- dagaz is written out in thc Sigrdrifumal in
which Sigurdhr must pass through the barrier which is described variously as a fire and a wall of shields
(elhaz) to awaken his valkyrja Sigrdrifa, whereupon she chants the “Hail to day.”1
Dagaz is the rune of the achievement of transcendent consciousness, in which the participant
becomes one with the universe in a flash of blinding awareness. It is the moment of awakening, the
eternal moment of being reached through Hegel’s process of thesis - antithesis-synthesis.
Dagaz is chiefly useful as a rune of meditation. It transforms consciousness and being on all levels.
Magically, dagaz can be used to bring something to completion, particularly in the settings
described above. It is useful in all workings of an “alchemical” type, whether they be practical or solely
concerned with consciousness.
Ritually, dagaz represents the moment of power at sunrise and sunset.
